English translation
Abu Hurayrah (RA) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, "Nothing has remained of prophethood except the mubashshirat (bearers of glad tidings)." The Companions asked, "What is meant by the mubashshirat?" He ﷺ replied, "Good dreams." (Bukhari)
Sleep is a natural need of every human being, and Allah, the Lord of Glory, has counted this act among the signs of His power. Allah Almighty says: "And among the signs of Allah's power is your sleeping by night and by day." (Surah al-Rum 30:23)
When a person sleeps, their state resembles that of a dead person, for their consciousness and senses cease; and when they awaken it is as though they receive a new life. Everyone who sleeps also dreams. Dreams are said to be of three kinds: one is mere thought, which reflects a person's occupations throughout the day; the second is that which reflects satanic influences; and the third is that which comes from Allah, manifesting glad tidings and good — these are also called true dreams.
The meaning of the above hadith is that, since the line of prophethood is now closed, revelation can no longer descend in any way; however, one thing of prophethood has remained, and that is the foretelling in a dream of events to come in the future — and these may be good or bad.
In one hadith a good dream is declared to be a forty-sixth part of prophethood (Bukhari and Muslim). Another narration states that the most truthful of you in dreams are those who are most truthful in speech.
Concerning dreams, this guidance of the Prophet ﷺ is also found: a good dream is from Allah, so a person should relate it before those who love them; but if they see something disliked in a dream, it is from Shaytan, so they should seek refuge from its evil, and, with the intention of driving Shaytan away, spit (blow) three times, and should not mention it to anyone — for then it will not harm them (Bukhari and Muslim). Another narration adds, along with the spitting, the instruction to change one's side: that is, if a person is lying on their right side they should turn onto the left, and if on their left side they should turn onto the right.
