English translation
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah is pleased for you with three things and displeased with three things." This narration has the wording: the three things He is pleased with for you are that you worship Him and associate nothing as a partner with Him; that you all hold fast together to the rope of Allah and do not fall into division; and that you be sincere towards the one whom Allah has placed in authority over you. And the three things He dislikes for you are: idle talk, excessive questioning, and the wasting of wealth. (Muslim)
In this hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mentioned three things that Allah loves and three things that Allah dislikes. Among the beloved things the first mentioned is choosing the servitude of Allah and not associating anything as a partner with Him. Shirk is an unforgivable crime whose punishment is Hell, as Allah says: "Indeed, whoever associates partners with Allah, Allah has forbidden Paradise to him, and his abode is the Fire." (al-Ma'idah 5:72) That is, whoever departs this world in a state of shirk will enter Hell; Paradise is forbidden to him and his forgiveness is absolutely impossible. Among the beloved things He then mentioned holding fast to the rope of Allah and avoiding division, which Allah mentioned in the Qur'an: "Hold fast, all together, to the rope of Allah and do not fall into division." (Aal 'Imran 3:103) That is, as long as the Muslims collectively hold fast to the firm rope of the Qur'an, this rope cannot break; indeed, if you all cling to it with full strength, Satan will not succeed in his mischief, and just like individual life, the collective life of the Muslim nation too will become unshakeable and beyond dispute — so hold fast to the Noble Qur'an, but if you move away from it you will split into separate sects. The third beloved thing is sincerity towards the ruler; this is in fact a prominent feature of the Islamic system of governance, in which the mutual relationship between the ruler and the ruled is founded upon sincerity and love — indeed it is made obligatory — and since the relationship between ruler and ruled is very delicate, emphasis has been placed on always dealing with it with sincerity. Of the three disliked things mentioned in this hadith, the first is idle talk — pointless and meaningless speech, arguing and disputing, digging into every matter and quarrelling; this is a sign of a corrupted mind. Such a person begins to take pleasure in talk and finds enjoyment in it, and it is the greatest loss to both religion and worldly life. The second thing disliked by Allah is excessive questioning; through excessive questioning a person becomes heedless of righteous action and his own self-reform. Likewise, stretching out one's hand before people and asking without need has also been declared undesirable; however, if out of necessity one has to ask someone for help, that is not disliked. The third thing disliked by Allah is the wasting of wealth — that is, spending it in improper and futile ways; if wealth is spent in wrong and pointless places, that is squandering, which Allah has forbidden, while He has encouraged spending wealth in His path, as Allah says: "Indeed, the wasteful are the brothers of the devils, and Satan is ever ungrateful to his Lord." (Bani Isra'il 17:27) May Allah grant us all the ability to adopt these beloved things and to avoid the disliked ones. Amin!
