English translation
'Abdullah ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Islam is built upon five things: to bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is the servant and Messenger of Allah, to establish the prayer, to pay the zakat, to perform the Hajj, and to fast in Ramadan." (Bukhari and Muslim)

Just as any building needs foundations and pillars in order to stand, so too Islam has its pillars and foundations, which are called the pillars of Islam (arkan al-Islam). It is therefore necessary for every Muslim to know these matters so that he is not negligent in fulfilling these pillars, for they are the foundational pillars of Islam. It should also be clear that the obligations of Islam are not confined to these five pillars alone; alongside them there are other obligations too, but the distinction that these possess is not found in the others. The first pillar is to take only Allah as the object of worship — to affirm that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad ﷺ is the servant and Messenger of Allah. Affirming this testimony and believing in it is in fact the means of entering the fold of Islam, and it is the very basis of all the pillars. The second pillar is the prayer: on one hand it is an offering of the remembrance of Allah and of turning to Him, and on the other it is the servant's acknowledgement and expression of his servitude before Allah; the prayer keeps us connected to Allah and restrains us from evil. The third pillar is zakat, which on one hand removes the love of wealth from the heart by spending it in the love of Allah and elevates our character, and on the other hand, by discharging the right of the needy out of one's wealth, cultivates a spirit of brotherhood and compassion in society. The fourth pillar is the Hajj, and the fifth is fasting in Ramadan; fasting on one hand teaches a person to control his desires, and on the other cultivates the spirit of God-consciousness and obedience to Allah. May Allah grant us all the ability to fulfil these pillars of Islam with sincerity of heart and to expend all our effort for the supremacy of Islam. Amin!
