English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do you know what most commonly admits people into Paradise? (That is, do you know which of the things that cause people to enter Paradise along with the successful ones is the greatest cause?) It is taqwa — that is, the fear of Allah — and good character. And do you know what most commonly leads people into Hell? They are two hollow things: the mouth and the private parts.” (Tirmidhi and Ibn Majah)

The lowest degree of taqwa (God-consciousness) is to abstain from shirk (associating partners with Allah), and its highest degree is to allow no thought of anyone besides Allah to enter one's heart. Good character (husn al-khuluq) means adopting good conduct towards Allah's creation; its lowest degree is that no creature be caused any harm or hurt, and its highest degree is that a person do good even to one who has treated him badly. There is a deep connection between taqwa and good character. Good character is the real capital of life and the adornment of existence. God-fearing and a sense of responsibility are the force by which a person's morals and character are made firm. Taqwa and good character are two such fundamental qualities that through them the doors of goodness open and virtues flourish; through taqwa and good character all the excellences that are desired in life are gathered within a person.

In this light, the meaning of the first part of the hadith is that whoever develops both these qualities — taqwa and good character — should know that the door of his salvation has opened, because through taqwa, that is piety, the pleasure of Allah is attained, and through good character the pleasure of Allah's creation is gained. It is obvious that when a person is such that both Allah and Allah's creation are pleased with him, what doubt can remain about his success! Allah will certainly admit such a person into that Paradise which He has promised to His righteous servants.

In the second part of the hadith it is indicated that the mouth and the private parts are two great sources of sin; falling into the evils that arise from them, a person tumbles into Hell. Thus the mouth — in which the tongue is also included — is a great means of misguidance and misdeeds. Whatever unlawful thing a person eats and drinks goes in through this mouth, and whatever forbidden, unlawful, absurd and obscene speech he utters, the tongue is its means. This very tongue and its speech betray what sort of morals and character a person has and what kind of a man he is. If a person is of a low mind, this lowness will be revealed through his speech; on the contrary, if a person is of lofty morals and character, his tongue too will surely give evidence of his loftiness.

The sexual urge has also been placed within man. So that a person's character is not wounded and he does not commit unlawful acts, it is necessary that he not let his sexual urge fall prey to waywardness. This same organ — whether of a woman or of a man — is Satan's most alluring snare, in which he ensnares people and casts them into Hell. Thus, on account of this very organ, a person is overpowered by sexual desires and, falling into carnal lust, disobeys his Creator. We regard the tongue and the sexual urge as two of man's weaknesses; controlling them is necessary, but controlling them is not easy. For this it is necessary that a person possess sound taste and thought and have before him some lofty and sublime aim in life; in that case we can expect that he will refrain from being swept along in the current of momentary passions and excitements. Because of a lack of control over carnal desire and the tongue, it is not only that a person loses his own worth and ruins his Hereafter, but in this world too human society has to face disorder, oppression, violence and manifold problems and calamities, and peace and tranquillity depart entirely from human society.
