English translation
It is narrated from Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Do not be an imma'ah (a spineless conformist), saying, ‘If people do good we too will adopt the way of goodness and kindness, and if they do wrong we too will do wrong’; rather, settle your hearts firmly: if people do good, then it is incumbent upon you to do good, and if they do evil, do not do wrong.”

An imma'ah is one who does not stand firm upon his own opinion but remains, in his reasoning, subservient to others. In this hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has advised the Ummah that this conduct is by no means correct — that your decision should be subordinate to the decisions of others and that you should say, ‘As people behave towards us, so shall we behave towards them.’ Rather, you should have your own opinion and a considered way of your own to which you hold firmly. The wrongdoing of wrongdoers can never be worthy of being followed; so towards those who treat you with evil you must never adopt the way of injustice. If someone wrongs you, do not transgress the limits; and if wrong is to be requited at all, care must be taken that in requiting it no kind of injustice or excess is permitted. In this matter observe fully the bounds of the Shari'ah. The preferable course is to respond to wrong with pardon and forbearance and to forgive the wrongdoer. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ never took personal revenge on anyone. And if you not only forgive him but even do good to him, that will be the loftiest station — a station attained by the truthful (siddiqin). In the Noble Qur'an Allah the Exalted says: “The requital of an evil is an evil like it; but whoever pardons and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allah; surely He does not love the wrongdoers.” (Ash-Shura 42:40)

Today how many evil deeds people commit in blind imitation of the corrupt people of a corrupt society. A person should himself reflect on the good and bad of every action, make a serious decision, and then act upon that decision with steadfastness. And if a deed is evil, it will remain evil even after people adopt it. Abstaining from such a deed is essential; this alone is the correct path of success and salvation.

This hadith in fact gives an important teaching about character-building. For character-building it is necessary that a person have a considered, serious decision about his own life — not that he has no will or decision of his own and is compelled to run after others; such a person will be characterless. For character it is essential that there be unity among a person's various desires and that his deeds reflect that unity. To build morals and character and to establish unity and harmony among desires and emotions, certain basic things are needed, whose teachings the Prophets (peace be upon them) have given. The greatest achievement of the Prophets (peace be upon them) is that they provide for human life all those required things that are needed for building conduct and character. In such a case it is a person's duty to adopt the teachings of the Prophets (peace be upon them) and to strive to bring himself and his society to success. Those who believe in the teachings of the Prophets — their faith demands that they be of firm character, that instead of following heedless and misguided people they always follow the truth, and that they never let that character be stained which reflects their faith. If people adopt a correct way of conduct in life, that is what is desired; but if they adopt a wrong way of conduct, they should not be followed. In every situation we must walk on the path of goodness and virtue.
