English translation
Narrated Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When morning comes, a charity is due upon every joint and limb of each one of you. Every glorification of Allah (saying Subhan Allah) is a charity, every praise of Him (saying Al-hamdu lillah) is a charity, every declaration of His oneness (saying La ilaha illa Allah) is a charity, and every proclamation of His greatness (saying Allahu Akbar) is a charity; to enjoin good is a charity and to forbid evil is a charity. And two rak'ahs which a person prays in the forenoon (Duha) are sufficient in place of all of that." (Muslim)

This hadith means that when a person wakes in the morning and every bone and joint of his body is safe and sound from affliction, he is thereby able to go about his work and the other occupations of the world. Every day a person is granted a new life; like the day that has passed, another day is given to him, and this life is obtained through the boundless mercy and favours of Allah. In this hadith, by way of example, each bone and joint of the human body is mentioned as a blessing. Every blessing and gift of Allah calls for the expression of gratitude, and it would be fitting for a servant to thank Allah for each of His favours through spending and charity, for that is clear proof of the sincerity of his intention. But out of His special grace and kindness to His servants, Allah has counted words of glorification and praise and other good deeds — such as enjoining good and forbidding evil — as charity; that is, by simply reciting a few words, charity is discharged on behalf of every bone and joint, and those words are neither heavy nor long nor difficult, but easy and effortless to utter: namely, saying Subhan Allah, Al-hamdu lillah, La ilaha illa Allah and Allahu Akbar. In this way it becomes possible for a servant to be in a state of thanking Allah for His favours.

Just as no prayer has been made obligatory during the long interval from Isha until Fajr, yet performing some rak'ahs of Tahajjud during it is encouraged, likewise no prayer has been made obligatory during the long interval from Fajr until Zuhr, yet during it two prayers are encouraged under the name "Salat al-Duha." If these rak'ahs are prayed a little after sunrise they are called "Ishraq," and if prayed after the day has fully risen they are called "Chasht" (Duha).

We know that the Duha prayer is not obligatory. Its rak'ahs show that a servant does not content himself merely with the obligatory acts but, out of his special attachment to Allah, seeks comfort through voluntary acts. If there is sincerity and no show in expressing such attachment to Allah, it stands in place of all charities; for charity is a manifestation of practical love for Allah. So if a person has had no opportunity to give all those charities and thank Allah for His bounties and favours, the rak'ahs of Duha suffice in place of all those charities. Perhaps this is also because prayer is a worship in which all a person's limbs and joints and his outward and inward being all take part; so it is fitting and better that this prayer be prayed regularly.

Salat al-Duha is a prayer of the earlier prophets and messengers; it is the prayer that Adam, Ibrahim, Dawud, Musa and Isa (peace be upon them) used to pray regularly.

In another hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever is regular in the two rak'ahs of Duha, all his sins will be forgiven, even if they be as numerous as the foam of the sea." (Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah and Musnad Ahmad)
