English translation
Amr ibn Shu'ayb narrates from his father Shu'ayb, who narrates from his grandfather Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "In whomever there are two qualities, Allah will record him among the grateful (shakirin) and the patient (sabirin). (The details of these two qualities are:) whoever has the habit that in matters of religion he looks to those servants who are above and superior to him and follows them, and in matters of the world he looks to those poor, needy and destitute servants who are lower than him in worldly standing, and thanks Allah that He has favoured him above them — such a person's state is that he will be recorded with Allah as patient and grateful. But whoever is such that in religion he always looks to those beneath him, and in worldly matters looks to those above him, and grieves and laments over the worldly bounties he has not been given — such a person will not be recorded with Allah as grateful and patient." (Tirmidhi)
Gratitude (shukr) and patience (sabr) are in reality two facets of faith and one's connection with Allah; when both are gathered in a servant, it is as though he has attained the perfection of faith and been granted the full wealth of religion. Its method and measure have been set out by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in this hadith. Here the Prophet ﷺ has taught the community that for a person to be grateful and patient it is necessary that in matters of religion (i.e. faith, deeds and character) he look to those above him, so that his own deeds seem few to him and he strives to follow those superior to him; while in the matter of worldly means he look to those of Allah's servants who are lower and worse off than him in worldly terms, so that no shortcoming occurs in his thanking Allah for the ease and well-being granted to him in comparison with them — which he should recognise as purely Allah's grace and kindness. The sense of our blessings being blessings increases when we see how many of Allah's servants are deprived of them.
The teaching of patience and gratitude is among the special teachings of Islam, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has encouraged and taught it in many ways. One result of acting upon this teaching is that the servant remains attached to Allah in every state; another benefit is that he is never defeated by hardships and failures, his spirit is not crushed by continuous grief and sorrow, despair and brokenness never come upon him, and these troubles cannot destroy his active powers.
A grateful servant is greatly beloved to Allah, while an ungrateful person is a mark of extreme narrow-mindedness. If some hardship befalls an ungrateful person, he dwells only on it; he does not see the countless blessings that are raining upon him even in the midst of that hardship, and he makes a mountain of a small trouble and keeps weeping over it. In contrast, the grateful servant's state is that even amid hardship his gaze remains on Allah's blessings; he thanks Him for those blessings, bears his hardship with patience, and at the same time prays for its removal. No fixed words are prescribed for giving thanks — every person may give thanks in his own language — but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has taught comprehensive words for expressing gratitude by which the benefit of thanking a thousand times over can be gained in a single utterance. Those words are: "O Allah, to You is all praise and thanks — thanks that endure with Your everlasting existence; to You is all thanks — thanks that remain forever with Your remaining forever; to You is all thanks — thanks that have no end but Your will; to You is all thanks — thanks whose speaker desires nothing but Your good pleasure; and to You is all thanks, upon every blink of the eye and every breath of the chest."
