It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Modesty (haya) is a branch of faith (or a fruit of faith), and faith leads to Paradise; while shamelessness and immodesty are part of wickedness, and evil leads to the Fire (Hell).” (Musnad Ahmad and Tirmidhi)

Modesty (haya) is a natural and fundamental quality that plays a very important part in shaping a person's character and conduct. It is what restrains a person from many evil deeds and bad words, and moves him towards good and honourable actions. In this way modesty is the root of many of a person's virtues and what saves him from many evils. Haya is one of the ways of Islam; there is a very special connection and bond between modesty and faith, which is why modesty has been described as a branch of faith whose fruit is Paradise. In contrast, shamelessness and immodesty are what lead to Hell.
