English translation
Ali al-Murtada (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (صلى الله عليه وسلم) said: “Whoever possesses the necessary provisions for the journey of Hajj, and has a mount available that can convey him to the House of Allah, and then does not perform Hajj—it makes no difference whether he dies a Jew or a Christian.” And this is because Allah Almighty has said: “Hajj to the House of Allah is a duty owed to Allah by those people who are able to make their way to it.” (Tirmidhi)
Allah Almighty has said in the Holy Qur’an: “It is a right of Allah Almighty upon the people that whoever is able to make his way to His House should perform the Hajj of that House; and whoever disbelieves (refuses to follow His command), then Allah Almighty is (indeed) free of all need of all the worlds.” (Aal-e-Imran 97)
In this hadith, for the stern warning against those who do not perform Hajj despite being able, reference has been made to the opening part of the above-mentioned Qur’anic verse. This verse is a proof of the obligation of Hajj upon every capable person, and the Qur’an has termed the one who does not perform Hajj despite being able as “disbelief (kufr),” leaving no doubt or uncertainty regarding the obligation of Hajj and the emphasis laid upon it.
In this hadith, concerning one upon whom Hajj has become obligatory and who, despite this, does not perform Hajj and dies without performing it, it has been said that the death of such people in this state and their dying as a Jew or a Christian are, as it were, equal.
May God protect us—how stern is the warning! Those people upon whom Hajj has become obligatory and who, out of laziness or worldly preoccupations, do not go for Hajj, while no compulsion recognized by the Shari‘ah prevents them from Hajj—for such people there is fear of an evil end. Many people make the marriage of their children an excuse, or consider the building of a house necessary, and do not go for Hajj; and some people make the excuse of business and trade, although in the Shari‘ah these things are not valid excuses.
Come! Today let us each examine ourselves: is Hajj obligatory upon us according to the Shari‘ah or not? And if it is, then let us not delay in performing it now, and let us discharge this obligation as quickly as possible. Who knows about death—when it may suddenly come upon one, or some illness may befall that leaves one incapable—becoming an obstacle in the path of this important obligation, which has been made a foundation of Islam.
