English translation
It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Hazrat Aisha the Truthful (may Allah be pleased with her): I sought the Messenger of Allah's permission to go for jihad, and he (peace be upon him) said: “Your jihad is Hajj.”
Hajj is a small but attractive word meaning resolve and intention. To fulfil it, millions of Muslims from all over the world leave behind their region, their land, their language, their dress and their sect and gather as a single, united community, performing collectively a number of acts in a particular order which are called the rites (manasik) of Hajj.
But over the past several centuries, as a result of the tyrannies imposed upon the Ummah, just as the true spirit of the religion has been stripped away, so too the true spirit of those acts given the status of pillars for religious training has been stripped away, and Hajj has been reduced to a limited act of worship in which merely performing a few outward movements and reciting a few words with the tongue is considered enough.
Faith is fundamentally a declaration and manifestation of rejection of oppressive, tyrannical powers and systems, and Hajj provides the Ummah collectively with the courage, resolve and determination for that rejection, and, as a special training ground, it also gives them intellectual and practical training. Until the awareness, feeling and courage to rise up against the Nimrods of the age is awakened in people, this act of worship will remain empty of its true spirit—the call to prayer of Bilal will remain, but it will be deprived of the spirit of Bilal!
Hajj is an occasion on which people are, within a few short days, drilled to accomplish the true mission of life in such a way that a person can benefit from it in the various phases of his striving. Every act of Hajj has a clear purpose that arranges the training for fulfilling a particular covenant. Because of the hardships undertaken in the acts of Hajj, Allah has made it obligatory only once in a lifetime and only upon those who have the means. This is why the Master of both worlds, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), declared it to be jihad for women—that is, women's jihad is not fighting but Hajj and Umrah.
In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called an accepted Hajj (Hajj-e-Mabrur) the good and beautiful jihad for women. The reason is that Islam takes account of the natural weakness of women—and why should it not, since Islam is a natural religion in which no one is burdened beyond his capacity, as Allah says: “Allah does not burden any soul beyond its capacity.” (Al-Baqarah 286)
It is Allah's favour upon the elderly, children, the weak and women that Hajj has been declared their jihad; in this way these people earn the reward of participating in jihad by performing Hajj. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “For the child, the old, the weak and the woman, Hajj and Umrah are jihad.” (Nasai)
This means that those who cannot take part in jihad because of some disability will attain the reward of jihad through Hajj and Umrah. By Allah's grace it is not far-fetched that the purity and elevation of the soul attained through jihad may be attained through Hajj and Umrah, for in some of their features Hajj and Umrah are a prelude and introduction to jihad. So if a person could not take part in jihad because of his disability, he will still deserve the reward of jihad through Hajj and Umrah—just as, in Allah's sight, one who set out from his home intending jihad but was not given the chance to face the enemies of truth on the battlefield because death overtook him deserves the reward of jihad.
