English translation
It is narrated from the Mother of the Believers, Hazrat Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “When the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah begin (i.e. when the moon of Dhul-Hijjah is sighted) and any of you intends to offer a sacrifice, he should not cut any of his hair or nails at all until he has performed the sacrifice.”
The first ten days of the month of Dhul-Hijjah are special days in Islam; in the blessed ahadith they are described as the most excellent and most honoured days, with special merits for worship, remembrance and recitation of the Qur'an.
In reality this ten-day period belongs to Hajj, and the most special act of these days is Hajj; but Hajj can be performed in practice only by travelling to the honoured Makkah, and not everyone has the means for it. The special blessings of Hajj can be attained only by those servants who go there and perform it. Yet in His mercy Allah has given all the believers the opportunity that, when these days of Hajj arrive, they too—while remaining in their own places—may establish a connection with Hajj and the pilgrims and share in some of their acts; this is the special wisdom behind the Eid al-Adha sacrifice.
On the tenth of Dhul-Hijjah the pilgrims present their sacrifices before Allah at Mina. Allah made this chain of sacrifice continue forever as a memorial to the episode of His great servant and friend Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and his young, obedient son Ismail Dhabihullah (peace be upon him) succeeding in their trial and test, as Allah says: “And We ransomed him with a great sacrifice, and We left for him (this sacrifice) among later generations.” (As-Saffat 107–108)
The other Muslims throughout the world who could not take part in Hajj are commanded to present their sacrifices before Allah, each in his own place, on that very day; and just as the pilgrim, after entering ihram, does not cut his hair or nails—which is among the prohibitions of ihram—so too the Muslims who intend to sacrifice should not have their hair or nails cut after the moon of Dhul-Hijjah is sighted, thereby creating a correspondence and resemblance with the pilgrims. Glory be to Allah! How comprehensive is the guidance of the Master of both worlds (peace be upon him), by following which the Muslims of the East and the West can share in the lights and blessings of Hajj.
By “hair” is meant the hair of any part of the body—the head, the moustache, the armpits, the pubic region or any other part—and “not cutting” means that he should neither shave it, nor thin it, nor pluck it, nor remove it in any other way. Shaving the beard is forbidden on all the days of the year, but in the first ten days of Dhul-Hijjah shaving the beard is even graver for those who intend to sacrifice.
All praise is to Allah that once again in all our lives that great ten-day period is coming—the special ten days of Eid al-Adha, the special ten days of divine mercy. In these days every good deed of a servant is greatly beloved to Allah and of great value: “Worship by a servant on no day is as beloved to Allah as it is in the ten days of Dhul-Hijjah (that is, worship in these days is more beloved to Allah than in all other days); fasting on each day of these ten is equal to the fasts of a whole year, and the voluntary prayers of each of its nights are equal to the voluntary prayers of the Night of Power.” (Tirmidhi)
These ten days are giving us this special message: that in the servitude of Allah alone and the obedience of Muhammad (peace be upon him), and in conveying the religion, if at need one must sacrifice or give up one's life and wealth, one's time and abilities, one's kinship ties, one's people and homeland, and even children dearer than life, then Allah's true believing servant should do so boldly and openly and care for no one. For those in whom this passion and yearning arises, the real Eid is for these obedient ones alone. Reflect! Are we among these fortunate ones?
