English translation
It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) once passed by a heap of grain (in the market). He put his hand into it and found his fingers had become wet (the grain was damp inside). He asked the seller, "What is this?" The man said, "O Messenger of Allah, it is the wetness of rain." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Why did you not put the wet grain on top so that buyers could see it? Whoever deceives us is not one of us." In a similar incident it is reported that he (peace be upon him) said, "Why did you not keep the wet separate from the dry, so that each would sell at its fair price? Whoever deceives us is not one of us."

Being regular in acts of worship is certainly praiseworthy, but religiousness and an Islamic life are not merely the name of worship; rather, following the guidance of the Shari'ah in dealings and business, besides worldly matters, is a very important part of an Islamic life. Allah Most High gave this such importance that He made it the very purpose of sending a great prophet: that after stopping his people from polytheism and idol-worship, he should especially teach them to be careful in business dealings and to act with justice and love of truth in weights and measures.

Just as there is a bodily illness in which a person's stomach is never filled however much he eats, so too the soul is afflicted by the disease of greed for wealth — however much wealth comes, it finds no rest. But just as the real need of one sick with hunger is not food but the cure of the illness, so too the peace of financial greed lies not in an increase of wealth but in the heart attaining contentment and satisfaction.

"He gives a hundred thousand for the giving of one — you have given a heart that asks for nothing."

When greed for wealth, honour and eminence takes hold of a man, he finds no rest upon reaching any station. In the end he becomes so obsessed in chasing it that he begins to trample every demand of religion and Shari'ah, morals and society, and the twenty-four hours of the day are consumed in this pursuit, until finally the person becomes harmful to Allah's creation. Thus there is a saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him): "Two hungry wolves set loose among sheep do not cause as much destruction as a man's greed for wealth and status is destructive to his religion." (reported by Ahmad and Tirmidhi). He called it more destructive than wolves because wolves stop once their bellies are full, but this greed does not leave a person at any station he reaches, unless the man himself turns his attention towards Allah and strives to cultivate within himself the spirit of patience and contentment.

The man seized by greed does not consider that he came from his mother's womb naked and hungry, yet it is Allah's grace that every child does obtain clothing and sustenance. So when (divine) power provides a thing of its own accord like this, what wisdom is there in sacrificing one's religion and faith for it! In a hadith the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that if you flee from your sustenance, it will catch and hold you, just as death seizes one (in every place and state). (reported by Tabarani). That is, a person's sustenance is as inevitable as his death and will surely reach him, so a person should spend his efforts only in earning lawful sustenance.

Wisdom lies precisely in this: that a person restrains his greed, sends down his throat only the lawful morsel and avoids the unlawful morsel in every case, for the unlawful invites the wrath of Allah, and Allah's wrath and His mercy cannot gather in one place.
