English translation
Abbas ibn Abd al-Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: "He has tasted the taste of faith and attained its sweetness who is content at heart with Allah as his Lord, with Islam as his religion, and with Muhammad (peace be upon him) as his Messenger and guide."
Faith in the Lordship of Allah Most High and in His Essence and attributes, certainty and conviction in the messengership and prophethood of Muhammad (peace be upon him), complete conviction in the truth and veracity of the religion and Shari'ah, and the following of Islamic teachings and rulings — all this should be accompanied by such a state that no corner of the heart and mind feels the slightest pressure, misgiving or displeasure; rather, a wave of willing acceptance, contentment and mental and spiritual peace should permeate one's entire inner and outer being — the kind of joy, delight and sense of honour that fills the whole being of heart, mind and body upon attaining some priceless thing. It is very important to keep this in view at all times, for if in this faith, certainty and practice one feels any kind of deceit or unease, then know that the true spirit of faith has departed. Though the rulings of faith and Islam may outwardly apply to such a person, yet, being devoid of sincerity, his faith will not be considered complete, nor will he be blessed with the beauty of Islam, nor will he be able to enjoy the true sweetness of faith and certainty.
This may also be understood in this way: just as there is a pleasure in delicious, flavourful physical foods which only that person can perceive whose sense of taste has not been spoiled by some illness and who has the full capacity to perceive it, so too there is a special pleasure and sweetness in faith. But it can be attained only by those fortunate people who have, with complete gladness of heart, made Allah Most High their Master, Sustainer and absolute Disposer of affairs, made Muhammad (peace be upon him) their guide, prophet and messenger, and made Islam their religion and the code of their life — and whose hearts have embraced servitude to Allah, obedience to Muhammad (peace be upon him) and the following of the way of Islam. That is, their connection with Allah and His Messenger and with Islam is not merely formal, inherited, or merely intellectual; rather, their engagement with them is one of the heart. Whoever is not blessed with this has certainly no share in the pleasure and sweetness of faith either, and his faith is not complete.
If one reflects, these very three elements are the completing principles of faith, and these are the three fundamental principles the knowledge of which is obligatory and necessary upon every person: namely, that the servant attain knowledge of his Lord, knowledge of his religion, and knowledge of his Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). And when a person passes his whole life accepting these three fundamental principles from the heart, then when Allah's believing servant departs this world and reaches the realm of Barzakh — that is, when he is buried in the grave — the angels of Allah come to him and ask him these very three questions: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? And who is this man who was raised among you (as a prophet)? — that is, they ask about Muhammad (peace be upon him). The believing servant answers these questions correctly and is then declared deserving of the mercy of Allah Most High.
May Allah Most High grant us all the ability to understand these three fundamental and important principles of the religion from the heart with complete certainty and conviction, and to spend our whole lives upon them. Ameen.
