English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah (after migrating from Makkah), he saw that the Jews fasted on the Day of 'Ashura (the 10th of Muharram). He ﷺ asked them, "What special day is this (in your religious traditions), and what is its distinction and importance?" They said, "For us it is a day of great significance; on it Allah delivered the people of Musa (peace be upon him), the Children of Israel, and drowned Pharaoh and his army. Musa (peace be upon him) fasted on this day in gratitude for this favour of Allah, and so we too fast on this day (in following him)." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "We have a closer connection to Allah's prophet Musa (peace be upon him) than you, and we have a greater right to him." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself also fasted on the Day of 'Ashura and commanded the community to fast on that day too.

From the apparent wording of this Hadith one might understand that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began fasting 'Ashura only after reaching Madinah, whereas the fact is the opposite. For the fast of the Day of 'Ashura was, even in the age of ignorance (jahiliyyah), a greatly revered day among the Quraysh: on the Day of 'Ashura the covering of the Ka'bah used to be changed, and the Quraysh fasted on it. It is likely that some traditions concerning this day had reached them from Ibrahim and Isma'il (peace be upon them), and the Quraysh gave importance to this day through their connection with the religion of Ibrahim. On this basis the Prophet ﷺ too used to fast on this day. So when he ﷺ came to Madinah the Illuminated and saw the Jews there also keeping the fast of 'Ashura, and it became known that this is that blessed, historic day on which Allah delivered Musa (peace be upon him) and his people, the Children of Israel, from Pharaoh and his army, he ﷺ gave the Muslims a general command to fast on this day as well.

The historical importance and grandeur of the Day of 'Ashura is also such that no other day can equal it. Looking into the history of religions and the biographies of the earlier prophets, it becomes clear that as many momentous events occurred on the Day of 'Ashura as occurred on no other day: the deliverance of Musa's people, the Children of Israel, from the tyranny of Pharaoh; the resting of Nuh's ark upon Mount Judi after the flood of Nuh had ended and the preparation for a new world to be settled; Yunus (peace be upon him) coming out from the belly of the fish; the acceptance of Ibrahim (peace be upon him)'s repentance; the birth of Yusuf (peace be upon him); the restoring of the sight of Ya'qub (peace be upon him), who had lost his sight from weeping in grief at separation from his son; the birth of 'Isa (peace be upon him) and then his being raised to heaven — all of this happened on this blessed day.

Concerning the importance of the fast of 'Ashura, it is also a saying of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that the fast of 'Ashura becomes an expiation for the sins of the previous year. (reported by Muslim)

And in one narration the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Concerning the fast of 'Ashura, I hope from Allah that it will be an expiation for the sins of the previous year." (reported by Ibn Majah)
