English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah has one hundred (100) mercies, of which He has sent down only one among jinn and mankind and the creatures of the earth, on account of which they show mutual tenderness and have mercy upon one another; because of this very mercy a wild animal is drawn toward its young. And ninety-nine (99) mercies He has kept in reserve, with which He will show mercy to His servants on the Day of Resurrection." (Bukhari, Muslim, and Tirmidhi)
Although man's first acquaintance with the Sacred Being of Allah the Almighty was established through the attribute of Lordship (Rububiyyah), yet the very soul of Lordship is mercy; that is why in Surah al-Fatihah, after "Lord of the Worlds," the attributes "the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate" are mentioned. Had there been no mercy, this nurturing too would not have been; rather, the very creation of the whole universe is the fruit of this same mercy. It was this fervour of mercy that, without any demand, granted the garment of existence to mere non-existence; but the demand of mercy was not fulfilled merely by giving existence to a thing brought from nonexistence and by there being an innocent one to forgive. Therefore the Most Merciful deliberately created, from light and darkness, a composite creature, so that it might sin, and when — even inadvertently — it raised its hands seeking forgiveness, mercy would find its pretext to forgive: let this one feel ashamed for having sinned, and let He take pride in forgiving. It is a strange thing that sinners do not seek the Most Merciful as much as the Most Merciful seeks the sinners; and this is the very reason that the sinless ones — that is, the angels — were present, yet the place of the sinners was still empty. The fervour of mercy desired to forgive those against whom a charge had already been laid; when it found no such one, it created a creature of this very quality; but when this creature was created, many of them abandoned the door of the Most Merciful — mercy kept calling and they did not so much as turn to look — yet, even after a lifetime of turning away, when understanding came, mercy again began to embrace and did not refuse, and pardoned all past sins. The attribute of severity and wrath, even after complete readiness, waits for the divine will before it descends upon those who deserve it; but the attribute of mercy encompasses everything without distinction, as the Most Merciful of the merciful Himself has said in one place: "I inflict My punishment upon whom I will, and My mercy has spread over everything." (Al-A'raf — 156)
With Allah the Almighty, the fundamental status belongs not to His wrath but to His mercy; the order of this universe is founded upon His mercy and justice, and His wrath falls only upon those people who transgress all bounds in rebellion and injustice.
The perfection of the perfect attributes of Allah the Almighty is such that each one, in its own place, is so complete that the sight of one makes one oblivious to the very thought of another; but this is the perfection of the Being of Allah the Almighty, that His every glory manifests itself at all times equally — He continues to show wrath in the very midst of mercy and mercy in the very midst of wrath, as He has said: "Inform My servants that I alone am the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful, and that My punishment too is a painful punishment." (Al-Hijr — 49, 50)
Wherever in the world, and in whatever form, mercy and love appear, it is in reality an effect of that mercy of Allah the Almighty which He has sent down into the world; the complete manifestation of Allah's mercy will be in the Hereafter. Those who are heedless of the Hereafter are depriving themselves of the boundless mercy of Allah the Almighty. The former communities were destroyed, more than by their sins, on account of this: that they expressed despair of the boundless mercy of Allah the Almighty. For the very display of this, the wonders of mercy will be seen in the plain of Gathering — so much so that even if a man who has killed a hundred, and a disbeliever after a lifetime of rebellion, should wish to turn toward mercy, mercy will embrace him once more, and even for criminals such as these a vastness will be seen in this mercy. But if the criminal does not himself seek the support of the attribute of mercy, then he ought not to feel secure from the grip of divine wrath. May Allah the Almighty grant all Muslims the ability to abstain from sins and to place complete trust and certainty in His perfect mercy. Ameen.
