English translation
It is narrated from Abū Hurayrah (RA) that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The religion is easy, and whenever anyone has overburdened himself in religion and been harsh in it, the religion has overcome him. So adopt the middle way and act with moderation, and receive glad tidings, and seek help (in worship) in the morning and the evening and part of the night." (Bukhari)
Religion did not descend upon man as a hardship; in reality it is the name of the correct and natural way of living. To walk the path of one's nature is easy for a person — unless one rebels against one's very nature. Through poor understanding, imprudence and other wrong tendencies, it has often happened that people have turned the easy and natural religion into a hardship for themselves and have attributed their own self-invented difficulties and customs to religion.
Allah Almighty says: "We have not sent down this Qur'an to you that you should be distressed." (Ta-Ha 20:2)
What this hadith seeks to teach is that in religion a moderate course has been approved for you, one that you can maintain. So never resort to extremism and excess in religion, and do not adopt of your own accord any conduct that departs from moderation; keep the balance of life intact and observe every responsibility.
Allah Almighty says in the Holy Qur'an: "Allah intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you." (Al-Baqarah 2:185)
Concerning charity, the teaching of the Qur'an is: "Do not keep your hand chained to your neck (i.e. so tight that you give nothing), nor open it wide altogether (giving everything away), lest you sit down blamed and destitute." (Al-Isra 17:29)
This is a proof of Allah's compassion and mercy towards mankind in general, and towards His beloved Prophet ﷺ in particular, that He prescribed an easy law for this Ummah. But such hadiths and verses never mean that, because there is ease in religion, anything a person finds difficult may simply be abandoned. Rather, they show that the law which Allah sent down through His beloved Prophet ﷺ is easy to act upon and not difficult. It was the Prophet's ﷺ own blessed practice that whenever he was given a choice between two matters, he — in perfect accord with human nature — chose the easier. On one occasion the Prophet ﷺ said:
"Good character, forbearance, and moderation and balance are one twenty-fourth (1/24) part of prophethood." (reported by Tirmidhī)
That is, these qualities are neither trivial nor of low rank; they have held a prominent place in the lives of the prophets (peace be upon them). Whoever gives these qualities more room in his character and conduct will be considered to have received that much more of the blessing of prophethood. Man's economic and social life is set right by adopting these very qualities and is spoiled by abandoning them. Moderation and balance are required in every affair of life. Wisdom lies in adopting a balanced course in all matters of life instead of excess or deficiency.
Abū ʿAbdullāh Jābir ibn Samurah (RA) says: I used to join the Prophet ﷺ in prayer; his prayer too was measured (moderate) and his sermon too was measured. (reported by Muslim)
May Allah grant all of us Muslims the ability to live a life of moderation in every sphere, in the light of the Qur'an and Sunnah. Ameen.
