It is narrated from ʿAlī ibn Abī Tālib (RA) that he said the last words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were: "Prayer, prayer! And fear Allah concerning those under your authority (your servants and dependents)." (Abū Dāwūd)

This hadith tells us how deeply the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, to his last breath, felt his responsibilities as a caller and reformer. Even as he was departing the world, the Prophet ﷺ was not heedless of discharging his duty, and he enjoined that we be heedless neither of the right of Allah nor of the rights of His servants. Among Allah's servants, bondmaids and slaves — being subordinate — are the more deserving of our attention and kind treatment, which is why he mentioned them and drew attention to the point that we must never neglect those under our authority; if any wrong or oppression is done to them, Allah's grip will be severe over it.

It comes in a hadith that a woman was punished because of a cat which she had tied up until it died of hunger — she neither fed it nor set it free to feed itself. The Allah who did not overlook the cat's suffering and injustice, so that the woman had to taste the consequence of her deed — how can He overlook the cries of oppressed human beings? That is why He said: fear Allah concerning those under your authority. If a person's nature has become so corrupt that he feels nothing for the helpless and the powerless, then at the very least he should think of his own suffering when Allah punishes him severely in the Hereafter for his oppression and cruelty.

In his final testament the Prophet ﷺ most emphasized prayer; given its importance, he repeated it. Prayer is a right of Allah due upon His servant, and besides that it is a great blessing and an honour for man. Prayer is a worship possessing so many special qualities that it is no easy matter to encompass them. In the light of the Qur'an and Hadith, the more we reflect the more the worth of prayer increases. A special quality and aspect of prayer is that it seeks to create in a person the attribute of always and at every moment feeling Allah before him. There can be nothing greater in life than feeling Allah near, and nothing that makes human life more dignified and precious. This is a wealth before which all the wealth of the world is worthless; it is such a delightful thing that beside it all the pleasures of the world become insipid. On attaining this supreme blessing, not only are a person's mind and heart set aright, but he begins to feel that without this blessing life is a desolate ruin holding nothing but dread.

It is learned from a hadith that prayer is the servant's meeting with his Lord. In a meeting a person is close to the one he meets; another aspect of a meeting is that both turn towards one another and converse together. All the features of a meeting are found in prayer, save one thing that can be said — that in an ordinary meeting a person sees with his eyes the one he meets, whereas the believer sees Allah not with physical sight but with insight and the eye of the heart. Allah Almighty says: "Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives all vision; and He is the Subtle, the Aware." (Al-An'am 6:103)

Prayer settles the majesty and lovableness of Allah firmly in the heart. Through prayer the capacity is created within a person for this attribute to remain ever present and fresh — that Allah is not far from him, and that the One with whom he always and at every moment has to deal is none other than the exalted Being of Allah.
