English translation
Narrated from Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him): When this verse (of Surah At-Tawbah) was revealed: "And those who hoard up gold and silver (wealth and riches, etc.) and keep on amassing it and do not spend it in the way of Allah — O Prophet, give them (the worshippers of wealth) the tidings of a painful punishment. (This punishment will befall them) on the Day when their hoarded wealth will be heated in the fire of Hell, and their foreheads, their sides and their backs will be branded with it (and it will be said to them:) This is the wealth you amassed and hoarded for yourselves; so taste now what you used to hoard." (At-Tawbah, 34–35) — when this verse was revealed, which contains a warning of a severe and painful punishment in the Hereafter for those who amass wealth as a hoard, it weighed heavily upon the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all), and they fell into great worry. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I will try to remove this worry and anxiety of yours." So he went to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "This verse weighs heavily upon your Companions." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah made zakat obligatory only so that the wealth remaining after it is paid becomes purified, and (likewise) He fixed the law of inheritance so that..." — Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) says: here he ﷺ said a word which I do not remember (but concerning inheritance he ﷺ had said that the law of inheritance was fixed) so that it may be a support for those you leave behind. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) — on hearing this answer, in his joy — said, "Allahu Akbar!" Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Umar (may Allah be pleased with him): "Shall I tell you of the best treasure a person can have, which deserves to be acquired and kept with care? It is a wife of good character and pious life, who gladdens the soul and heart of a man when he looks at her, who obeys him and carries out a task when he asks it of her, and who, when her husband goes away somewhere, guards his household and every trust in his absence."
When the verse of Surah At-Tawbah mentioned in the hadith was revealed, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all), from its apparent words and manner, understood that its meaning and demand was that one should not save anything at all from one's earnings and should not accumulate wealth at all — whatever one had should all be spent in the way of Allah; and it is obvious that this is a very heavy and extremely difficult thing for human beings. Seeing the distress of the Companions, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) took courage and asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that this verse concerns those people who amass wealth and do not pay its zakat; but if the zakat is paid, then the remaining wealth becomes lawful and pure. On this occasion the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Allah made zakat obligatory precisely so that, by taking it out, the remaining wealth is purified. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ further said that in the same way Allah established the law of inheritance so that, after a person passes away, it may be a support for those he leaves behind. In this answer the Messenger of Allah ﷺ also indicated that if amassing wealth were entirely forbidden, there would have been no command of zakat and no law of inheritance in the Shariah, because both of these commands of the Shariah relate to accumulated wealth; if keeping wealth were not permitted at all, the question of zakat and inheritance would not even arise.
After answering Umar's question (may Allah be pleased with him), the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, for the mental training of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all), also said one further thing: that the thing more useful than wealth and riches — the greatest treasure of peace of heart and comfort of soul in this world — is a good, virtuous and obedient wife; value her even more than wealth and riches and regard her as a special blessing of Allah. He ﷺ said this on that occasion because in that age women were greatly undervalued and great injustice was done to them.
