English translation
Narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said that Allah, the Exalted, said: "I am the most independent of partners and free of any need for a partner. Whoever does a deed in which he associates another with Me, I leave him and his partner (to that deed) and I disown him."

Faith (iman) has two parts. The first is to believe in Allah as the sole object of worship and not to associate anyone with Him; the second is to accept the Messenger as Messenger, and to adopt his very way — that is, to follow the Sunnah. In other words, iman is the name of affirming the Oneness of Allah (tawhid) and the messengership (risalah). Every prophet, wherever and whenever he came, first of all called his people to tawhid, as Allah said:
"O Prophet, We did not send any messenger before you but We revealed to him that there is no god but Me, so worship Me alone." (Al-Anbiya – 25)

The opposite of tawhid is shirk (associating partners with Allah), and the opposite of following the Sunnah is bid'ah (innovation). Shirk is so evil a thing that the Merciful and Generous Allah declared in His Book:
"Indeed Allah will not forgive that partners be associated with Him, but He forgives whatever is less than that for whom He wills." (An-Nisa – 48)

Allah is our Creator and Master. He has reserved certain things for His own Being, and placed certain things upon the servants that are the marks of servitude. Thus it is an attribute of Allah that He is aware of everything at all times, present everywhere through His knowledge, the Knower of everything apparent and hidden; He has absolute power; to command, to cause death, to give life, ease, hardship, health and sickness, and to give help in difficulty — all this is of Allah's majesty.

Likewise the prayer (salah) and its acts — namely standing (qiyam), bowing (ruku'), prostration (sujud) and so forth — fasting, giving zakat and charity, travelling to visit His House, performing tawaf around it, sacrificing animals to seek His pleasure, and supplicating to Him — these and many other acts Allah has taught the Muslims as forms of His worship.

Shirk is not only that someone be regarded as equal to Allah or as a rival to Him; rather, to offer before others those things which Allah has reserved for His own Being and declared to be marks of the servants' servitude, and to venerate other than Allah as Allah is venerated — that too is shirk — even if that other is regarded merely as Allah's creation and His servant. Thus Allah said, concerning the Jews and Christians who were not idol-worshippers, just as He said of the idol-worshippers:
"They took their scholars and monks, and the Messiah, son of Mary, as lords besides Allah, although they were commanded to worship none but One God, besides whom there is none worthy of worship, who is pure and exalted far above the shirk they commit." (At-Tawbah – 31)

The polytheists of the time of the Messenger ﷺ too did not regard the idols as equal to Allah; rather they considered them His servants and creation, and they also knew that they possessed no divine powers. They regarded them merely as a means of nearness (to being close to Allah). Their shirk was that they gave the rights of Allah to His servants. Allah, the Exalted, says:
"Behold, pure religion is for Allah alone. And those who take others as protectors besides Him (say): We worship them only that they may bring us nearer to Allah in rank. Surely Allah will judge between them in their disputes. Remember, Allah does not guide the one who is a liar and ungrateful." (Az-Zumar – 3)

May Allah grant us all a correct understanding of His religion, and the ability to follow it until death, and admit us all into His Paradise. Amin.
