English translation
Narrated from Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “When a Muslim visits his (sick) brother, he remains engaged in gathering the fresh fruits of Paradise until he returns.” The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, “What is khurfat al-Jannah (the fruit of Paradise)?” He ﷺ said, “Its gathering of fresh fruit.”

Visiting a sick person is a deed of very great reward, and among the rights of one Muslim over another that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has laid down is also the visiting of the sick. To sit with the patient, comfort and cheer him, and speak encouraging words to him, is a Sunnah.

Visiting the sick is one of the mutual rights of Muslims, through which love and affection are created among them, their bonds and relationships are strengthened, and a spirit of mutual respect grows. To serve Allah’s creation and to treat them well and kindly is greatly beloved to Allah, and He grants the best reward for it, as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ has stated in this hadith too. In another hadith its virtue is described thus:

When a Muslim visits another Muslim in the morning, seventy thousand angels keep praying for his good until the evening; and if he visits in the evening, seventy thousand angels keep praying for his good until the morning; and he is also granted a garden in Paradise. (Reported by Tirmidhi)

It was the constant practice of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that whenever he received news of the illness of any of his acquaintances, he would go to visit him. Among the etiquettes of visiting is to place one’s hand on the patient’s forehead and ask after his condition — provided that touching him or asking after him does not cause the patient discomfort; if there is fear of discomfort, one should neither place the hand nor ask, and in that case it is enough to inquire about his wellbeing from those nursing him.

As much as Islam has described the virtue of visiting the sick, it has emphasised even more that one’s actions should not cause the patient even the slightest discomfort. A visit that puts the patient or his carers to trouble carries, instead of reward, a severe danger of punishment. Thus, if meeting someone is harmful for the patient, then it is not at all permissible to insist on meeting; in such a case, the virtue of visiting is attained by inquiring about his condition from outside and praying for him — there is absolutely no need to wake the patient or to announce oneself. Likewise the hadith emphasises that whoever goes to visit a patient should not sit with him for too long, but should leave after a brief visit, because sitting too long usually causes the patient discomfort. Yes, if the patient himself, out of ease with someone, wishes that person to stay for his own comfort and consolation, there is no harm in his sitting. Choosing a suitable time for the visit is also very important; it is not right to go to visit at a time when the patient’s rest or other routines would be disturbed, so one should first ask the carers what the suitable time for a visit would be.

Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went to visit a sick person, he would make this supplication: “La ba’sa tahurun in sha Allah” — There is no harm; if Allah wills, this illness is a purifier from sins. (Reported by Bukhari)
