English translation
Narrated from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: One of the supplications of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم was this: “O Allah! I seek refuge in You from knowledge that does not benefit, from a supplication that is not heard, from a heart that does not humble itself, and from a soul that is never satisfied.”

Supplication (du’a) holds a special place in strengthening one’s bond with Allah and in properly training the soul. Supplicate to Allah alone, because supplication is the very marrow of worship, and none but Allah’s own Being is deserving of worship. The teachings of the Qur’an and Sunnah mention its boundless effect. Allah, the Exalted, says: “To Him alone is the true call. Those who call upon others besides Him give them no answer at all — except like one who stretches out both his hands towards water that it may reach his mouth, though it will never reach his mouth. And the calling of these deniers is nothing but misguidance.” (Ar-Ra’d – 14)

It is a most alarming situation for a person that he be deprived of beneficial knowledge, that his supplication not be accepted, that his heart be empty of humility, and that his soul find no contentment; this state is most grave. That is why the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought refuge from these things. The rightly-guided person is the one whose knowledge is beneficial, with whom Allah is pleased, whose call is heard, whose heart is filled with humility, and whose soul is content — whose condition is not like that of a hungry beast that keeps nuzzling at every green pasture yet is never satisfied. Such a person is far from guidance, and it is hard to hope for his coming to the right path.

In this supplication the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought refuge from non-beneficial knowledge. That is knowledge from which a person neither benefits himself nor benefits others through it — because beneficial knowledge is only that which enters into our life; without action, knowledge is not knowledge in the true sense. A person knows many matters of religion and strives to know them, but in reality he has learnt only that which he has adopted in his own life. Along with this, our effort should also be that other servants of Allah may benefit from our knowledge, and that this circle of benefiting others may keep widening.

The second thing from which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought refuge is supplication. Only that supplication is accepted behind which there is sincerity. If a person is engaged in filling his belly with unlawful earnings, if the clothing on his body is from unlawful earnings, and he has no concern for lawful sustenance — then however much such a person cries and beseeches in supplication, how can it be heard? The one who is cut off from Allah, who is heedless of his relationship with Allah in life, who has adopted a rebellious way, and who has cast aside Allah’s will and preference — with what face does he then call upon Allah and invoke Him? Reflect: what weight can his supplication carry in the sight of Allah?

The third thing from which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought refuge is a heart that is a stranger to humility (khushu’). A heart in which there is no humility is a soulless, dead heart, and a dead heart is without capacity. Khushu’ means calmness, and the expression of humility and lowliness. The complete expression of khushu’ is in prayer (salah), when the servant turns wholly to Allah from every side and, in perfect tranquillity, becomes the very embodiment of humility and neediness before Allah. For gaining something from Allah and for benefiting from religion and faith, khushu’ is as necessary as lowness is for water to flow — that is, water flows to wherever the ground is low. Without khushu’ the heart becomes hard, and such a heart is far from Allah.

The fourth thing from which the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sought refuge is a soul that is never satisfied. The contentment of the soul is tied to faith; without faith the hunger of the soul is never stilled. Look at worldly people: their wealth is unable to give them contentment and peace; rather, their wealth only increases their hunger. Thus they always appear to fail in attaining their goal. In contrast, the people of faith appear content even in poverty and want, because they attain a thing before which the greatest of the world’s things appears as nothing.
