English translation
Narrated from Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) from the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم that he said that Allah, the Blessed and Exalted, says: “O son of Adam! If you exercise patience at the first onset of the affliction and keep My good pleasure and reward before your eyes, I will not be pleased with any reward for you less than Paradise, nor with anything besides it.”

A person’s life is never free of two states: either he enjoys comfort and ease, or he faces some hardship and affliction. Whichever of these states befalls him, the believer learns only good from it, and this quality belongs to the believer alone. A non-believer derives no benefit either from joys and comfort or from grief and affliction. If he is granted a life of comfort and ease, he becomes arrogant; you will see nothing in his life but rebellion and ingratitude. And if some affliction befalls him, he becomes restless and displays impatience; you will find him nothing but a complaining servant. But the believer’s conduct is entirely different: in joy and ease he is grateful to his Allah, and if some affliction and hardship reach him he takes hold of patience. He understands that there is some good in it for him, and he is content with the decree of his Lord. This patience and gratitude are in reality those lofty values of life without which we cannot conceive of any noble character.

Grief over the parting of children or relatives is natural; in this world the chain of encountering grief and sorrow remains attached to life, and there is no escape from this sorrow in this world. The believer too encounters this grief and sorrow, but he exercises patience over it for the sake of Allah’s good pleasure. This grief and affliction over which the people of faith are patient, Allah makes an expiation for their ordinary sins and shortcomings; the result of which is that when the believer departs from this world, he leaves entirely pure and cleansed of sins. What greater reward can there be than exercising patience over affliction? In a noble hadith the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said that trials keep coming upon believing men and believing women — sometimes an affliction comes upon the person himself, sometimes upon his children, and sometimes upon his wealth (and he keeps exercising patience, by which his heart keeps being cleansed and evils stay away from him) — until, when he meets Allah, there is no sin upon him. (Reported by Tirmidhi)

In the Glorious Qur’an, Allah, the Exalted, says: “And We will surely test you with something of fear and danger, hunger, and loss of wealth, lives, and fruits (of labour); and give glad tidings to those who, when a misfortune befalls them, (are patient and) say, ‘To Allah alone we belong and to Him we shall return.’ Upon them will be great favours from their Lord and His mercy, and it is they who are rightly guided.” (Al-Baqarah 155-157)

The meaning is that in every state we are content with the good pleasure of Allah; His every act is based on wisdom, expedience, and justice, and whatever He does, He does for some greater good. The task of a faithful servant is that not even for a moment should a frown appear on his brow.

The impact of a shock is in reality greatest at its very beginning; after some time passes, the effect of grief and shock naturally fades away of itself. This is why, in this noble hadith, the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم mentioned the reward for exercising patience at the onset of the affliction. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم announced, on Allah’s behalf, that when a believing servant, upon being struck by an affliction, exercises patience with the intention of Allah’s good pleasure and reward, Allah will surely grant him Paradise, and Allah will not be pleased to give in exchange for his patience anything of a rank lower than Paradise.

When any affliction of any kind befalls a believing servant, if at that moment he remembers this hadith and this gracious promise of Allah and exercises patience, then — Allah willing — he will find a special sweetness and delight in that patience, and in the Hereafter he will certainly be granted Paradise from Allah as well. May Allah grant us all the ability to be patient at all times and in every state. Ameen.
