English translation
Narrated from Mu’awiyah ibn Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) that the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Whoever is pleased that people should stand up in his honour, let him make his abode in the Fire.”
The scholars have written in explaining this hadith that this warning concerns the person who, out of pride, likes people to stand before him to honour him, or who out of arrogance and pride orders people to stand before him, or makes it obligatory upon people that whenever he appears before them they should all stand up. It is obvious that the place of the arrogant is Hell. But if a person does not wish it at all, and rather other people stand up for him out of a feeling of respect, devotion and love, that is an entirely different matter — although the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم disliked even this for himself.
As it comes in a blessed hadith: once the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم came out leaning on a staff (a stick), and the Companions stood up. Upon this the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Do not stand as the non-Arabs (ʿajam) stand up for one another in mutual reverence.” (Reported by Abu Dawud)
What the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم meant was that it is the custom of the non-Arabs that when their chief or a great man enters their gathering, they stand up merely on seeing him and then remain standing before him respectfully with folded hands. So through this saying the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم pointed to the fact that the lesser and lower among them stand up in this way for their elders and those of higher rank merely on seeing them, because if they do not stand up those great men will be displeased with them — for which reason they keep standing before them out of reverence. From this it becomes clear that standing (qiyam) is forbidden in the blessed hadith when it is by way of displaying pomp and grandeur and out of arrogance and haughtiness; but the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم, out of humility and modesty, forbade the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) from standing up for himself. The upshot is that if such a person appears who possesses knowledge, excellence and eminence, then standing up to honour and revere him is permissible; there is nothing wrong in it. However, standing up for a person who is not only undeserving of this honour but even desires and wishes that people should stand for him when he comes, is forbidden; and likewise standing up by way of undue flattery and sycophancy is also disliked. Similarly, standing up for worldly people and honouring them is also forbidden, and the severe warning in this blessed hadith is for just such people.
Now whoever it may be — whether he wears a cloak with a turban-cloth arranged on his head, or is dressed in uniform — if he insists on ceremonial standing, then let him be concerned about his own end. As for those who admire them, instead of obeying them they should act upon this command of the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم: “There is no obedience to any creature in disobedience to Allah.” (Reported in hadith)
That is, in any matter that involves disobedience to Allah the Exalted and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم — anything forbidden in the Qur’an and hadith — it should never be obeyed at anyone’s bidding, whoever among creation it may be: mother and father, spiritual guide and mentor, head of government, or the ruler of any institution; among these too no obedience contrary to the Shariah should be rendered. Let us reflect ourselves: regarding ceremonial standing the noble Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم forbade it, and going against the noble Prophet’s صلى الله عليه وسلم prohibition is certainly disobedience to Allah the Exalted — so ceremonial standing is indeed disobedience to Allah the Exalted, and to accept disobedience to Allah at any creature’s bidding is to anger and enrage Allah and His Messenger صلى الله عليه وسلم.
Every person afflicted with this disease should keep this hadith before him and reflect on what benefit there is in the false honour obtained through this coercion and oppression — an honour that is due to office and rank, not to the merits of one’s own person. The day the office and power are gone, that so-called honour and obedience are gone too.
