English translation
Jābir (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to teach us to perform istikhāra in all our affairs, just as he taught us the Qur'an. He ﷺ would say: “When any of you is concerned about some important matter, let him pray two rakʿahs of voluntary prayer and then make this supplication:”

(O Allah, I seek Your guidance by Your knowledge, and I seek strength through Your power, and I ask You of Your immense bounty; for You have power and I have none, and You know and I do not, and You are the Knower of all that is hidden. O Allah, if You know that this matter is good for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it; and if You know that this matter is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood and the outcome of my affair, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and then make me content and at peace with it.)

When one intends to do something, one should seek counsel from Allah; this seeking of counsel is called istikhāra. In the important affairs of life — such as travel, marriage, employment, trade and the like — the Master of both worlds ﷺ taught us to perform istikhāra. Istikhāra means to seek what is good and beneficial. In important and permissible matters where the good course is not clear, one should certainly make a point of performing istikhāra, and then adopt whatever the heart inclines towards, regarding it as the pleasure of Allah.

Another noble hadith tells us that for a child of Adam to seek Allah's counsel (istikhāra) is a mark of felicity, and to be content with Allah's decree is also a mark of felicity, while it is the misfortune of a child of Adam that he does not seek Allah's counsel and is displeased with Allah's decree. (Musnad Aḥmad)

The manner of istikhāra is this: whenever some out-of-the-ordinary matter arises, then — outside the disliked (makrūh) times — pray two rakʿahs of voluntary prayer whenever you wish and recite the above istikhāra supplication, and in place of the underlined words “hādhā al-amr” (this matter) name your own need and state it, or bring your particular need to mind while saying “hādhā al-amr.” If the istikhāra is to be done at night, then after reciting the supplication one should sleep in a state of ablution on a clean bed, facing the qibla; whatever comes firmly to the heart on waking is the better course, and that is what one should do.

If after one day nothing becomes clear and the heart's unease and hesitation do not lift, then do the same again the next day, and so on for seven days; God willing, the goodness or badness of the matter will surely become known.

The one who performs istikhāra never comes to ruin, and if some matter does turn out otherwise, then in truth that was his destiny, and over it the believer always exercises patience, which is one of his essential traits. On one occasion the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said concerning those who perform istikhāra: the one who performs istikhāra never fails, the one who takes counsel never regrets, and the one who lives frugally is never in need of anyone.
