English translation
Abdullah ibn ʿAmr (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “Beware of miserliness and greed, for indeed this miserliness and greed destroyed those who came before you.” (Muslim)

In this blessed hadith the Messenger of Allah ﷺ gave the Ummah an important guidance for its welfare, because miserliness and greed are a cause of ruin; earlier nations too were destroyed on account of them, and these traits can prove dangerous for one's life to come. Allah says: {And whoever is saved from the greed and miserliness of his own soul — such are the successful} (al-Hashr: 9).

Because of miserliness and narrowness of heart, various kinds of moral corruption arise in a person. When this disease spread among earlier nations, those nations became worshippers of the world and made the world alone their goal and qiblah. The result was that people began to trample one another's rights; their measures for giving and for taking became different — they would take in full but give short measure. The feelings of sympathy and compassion became meaningless among them, and this disease grew so severe that every admonition proved ineffective for them; in the end nothing could save them from destruction and ruin, and they met the fate destined for such nations.

What is truly required of human character is breadth of heart and delicacy of feeling. If this is not within us, then in the sight of reality none is more worthless than us. In assessing a person or a nation, what really matters is not what goods and possessions or how much wealth they have, but rather what that person or nation itself is. From this angle we should first keep examining our own selves. Man is not merely a frame made of dust and blood; rather he is something more than that. Generally our eyes stop at this outward frame, and so we make the mistake of treating it as the true measure of gain and loss. We always overlook the human soul, by whose radiance the very existence of this outward frame is sustained. In this material world the full comprehension of the soul is difficult, but in comprehensible terms we may say that man is in reality a moral being. In this way it is not so hard to judge the health or unhealthiness of his soul. The sign of the soul's health and beauty is breadth of mind and heart and nobility of nature. If you possess this, then you possess a healthy soul; otherwise there remains no doubt that your soul is sick, and sickness is the harbinger of death. If health is neglected, its outcome is nothing but ruin and death.

Islamic teachings stress, to an astonishing degree, that a person should endure hardship, difficulty and calamity in the world and accept them, but should never be willing to accept his own moral and spiritual death. To save the soul from ruin a person should be ready for every sacrifice, and for its protection he should gladly bear every pain and affliction.

Miserliness is in reality the death of the human soul. Miserliness is that prison in which the human soul, confined, is choked and dies. The soul is unseen — this is a mark of its vastness and depth. Despite being unseen, the soul manifests itself in various ways; these ways are connected with a person's emotions, feelings, knowledge and deeds. It is in the mirror of emotions, feelings and deeds that the soul's radiance becomes possible. Those who are deprived of guidance have very base emotions, feelings and desires; their knowledge is astray and their deeds are not the manifestation of any lofty character. Nor is there found among them any balance and perfect harmony between these three, so that their personality is left utterly devoid of real charm and attraction. In contrast, those who are not afflicted by miserliness and greed understand well that the breadth of mind and heart they possess is the most precious thing. These are the people who understand the true meaning of guidance, and these are the ones who truly savour the sweetness of truth. May Allah grant all Muslims the ability to save themselves from the ugly disease of miserliness and greed. Ameen.
