Abu Hurayrah (RA) reported that a man asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to give him some advice. The Prophet ﷺ said: “Do not become angry.” The man repeated his request several times, and each time the Prophet ﷺ said the same: “Do not become angry.” (Bukhari and the Muwatta of Imam Malik)

Man is not merely the name of this outward body; rather our Creator has placed within us various kinds of emotions and states. Within us are love, hatred, cowardice, anger, compassion, hard-heartedness, generosity, stinginess and so on — all present in every human being. These emotions and states are not in themselves evil; rather it is their use that makes them good or bad. Outwardly, love of wealth is a bad thing, but this very love urges a person to gather something for himself and his children, which is a good deed; yet if love of wealth stops a person from paying zakat and charity, then this very love becomes a bane for him. Such is the case with all human emotions. Anger too, depending on its occasion and place, becomes good or bad. A father's anger at an unseemly act of his child is a rain of mercy for that child, so long as that anger stays within its bounds. The anger this hadith apparently gives guidance about is the anger that takes the form of rage.

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give each person an answer suited to his condition. The questioner was one over whom anger held sway, and that is why the Prophet ﷺ emphasised to him not to become angry. Everyone knows that in anger most people lose their balance and observe no regard for limits; in anger unseemly words come to the tongue, and sometimes a person goes further and undertakes an act whose outcome appears in a most dreadful form; and even if a person does not undertake any such act, his heart is at least filled with rancour and malice.

The advice of the Prophet ﷺ is such that if anyone acts upon it he can very quickly become a model of moral virtues. When anger comes, we should think that Allah's wrath and anger is the greatest of all, yet He shows forbearance; countless people disobey Him day and night, yet He forbears and does not seize them at once for their disobedience.

In another hadith it comes thus: no servant has swallowed a draught more excellent, in the sight of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, than a draught of anger which he swallows seeking Allah's pleasure and good will. (Reported by Musnad Ahmad.)

The outcome of anger is always most dangerous, so swallowing the draught of anger is, in Allah's sight, better and more excellent than any other draught — on condition that a person swallows this draught purely for Allah's pleasure, with no other motive. Only that person is able to restrain anger who has within him the capacity to forgive people's faults and their oppression, and to whom Allah's good pleasure is more beloved than everything in the world. In the Noble Qur'an, among the attributes of the people of piety, Allah says:
{and those who restrain anger and pardon people} (Aal ʿImran: 134).

That is, when anger provokes them they swallow it — that is, they do not act upon it — and they forgive those who wrong them. In another narration it comes that the Prophet ﷺ said: when one of you becomes angry, let him sit down; then if the anger goes, well and good, otherwise let him lie down. (Reported by Tirmidhi and Musnad Ahmad.)

This is an effective psychological device for controlling anger. The improper acts and vain deeds that issue from a person in anger become far less likely once he sits down, and if he lies down then in that state he becomes, as it were, naturally detached from vain deeds. There is strong hope that by adopting this device taught by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a person will easily gain control over his anger.

How well a wise man said concerning anger: anger always begins with folly and ends in regret.
