English translation
Hazrat Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that he came to the Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم; he (i.e. Abbas) had heard disrespectful words spoken by the disbelievers about the Prophet. At this the Prophet, grieved and angry, stood upon the pulpit and said, “Who am I?” The Companions replied, “You are the Messenger of Allah.” In answer to the disbelievers’ objection he said, “I am Muhammad, son of Abdullah, son of Abdul-Muttalib. When Allah created the creation, He created me among the human race (the best of creation); then, of the two divisions of mankind, He created me among the Arabs; then Allah made the tribes and groups of the Arabs and created me in the best of them, the tribe of Quraysh; then Allah made several households within the Quraysh and created me in the noblest of them, the Banu Hashim. So I am the most excellent of all mankind in lineage and person, and the most excellent of all in family and household.”
(Tirmidhi)

Remembering the Messenger is an act of worship. Just as the remembrance of Allah earns reward and is not restricted to any particular time, so too remembering the Prophet earns reward and is not restricted to any particular time or manner; rather it should be done at all times, and however much one does is little. It is a remembrance that suffices for all our religious and worldly affairs. One should understand that there are two aspects to remembering him: one is the mention of his person and his perfections, and the other is the mention of the message with which he was sent. From whichever aspect he is remembered, it is a source of good and blessing. But one must also see which aspect held greater importance in the Prophet’s own life; and in this regard it is necessary to know the purpose of his being sent. In Surah al-Jumu‘ah, verse 2, Allah, the Lord of Honour, described the purpose of his mission thus:
“It is He who raised among the unlettered a Messenger (Muhammad) from among themselves, who recites to them His verses, purifies them, and teaches them the Book and wisdom.” (al-Jumu‘ah 2)
Likewise, in Surah al-Muddaththir, verses 1–6, the objectives of his mission are stated; their summary is: (1) the Oneness of Allah, (2) belief in the Last Day, (3) attending to the purification of the soul, (4) entrusting all affairs to Allah, (5) the teaching of patience.
From both these verses it is clear that his true rank lies in reform and in joining people to their Lord. This is the aspect that most needs to be mentioned and made widely known, because the ultimate basis of our salvation rests upon our deeds, and action is the very means of nearness to Allah.
But nowadays the aspect that is stressed most is his noble birth, the events connected with it, and his perfections; and this alone is considered enough to fulfil the due of love, while following him and acting upon his teachings is reduced to nothing. Abu Talib loved him so much that for his sake he stood against the whole of the Quraysh—perhaps not one Muslim in millions today could claim such love—yet he did not accept faith and did not act upon his teachings, and so that love did not suffice for salvation. Thus it is clear that the best means of expressing love is to follow the Prophet, not merely to express love.
Certainly the mention of his circumstances and perfections is also important, for through it love for the Prophet increases, and following, obeying and acting upon the words of the one whom you love becomes easy; but this too has its proper manners. Here one must also bear in mind that everyone’s praise accords with his taste, and if this principle is not kept in mind, then praise and eulogy in reality cease to be praise and instead become disrespect and insolence. The Prophet himself said: “Do not exalt me beyond bounds as the Christians exalted Jesus (peace be upon him); call me the servant of Allah and His Messenger.” (Bukhari and Muslim)
The mistake of the Christians was precisely this: they attributed to Jesus (peace be upon him) things that did not befit his rank, and by doing so they thought they were expressing his greatness, whereas in reality they were being insolent towards him and towards Allah the Exalted. In their own estimation they kept earning virtue, while their record of deeds kept being blackened with sins.
