English translation
ʿĀ'ishah (RA) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever introduces into this affair of ours (i.e., the religion) something new (i.e., an innovation) that is not part of it, it is rejected."

Literally, bidʿah is anything done without any prior precedent. In the terminology of the Sharīʿah, bidʿah is a belief or practice that is taken up or abandoned as though it were part of the religion, while there is no evidence for it — neither from the Qur'an nor from the Hadith — nor did it exist in the era of the Companions, the Successors (tābiʿīn) and their successors (tabaʿ al-tābiʿīn). For it is narrated from the Prophet ﷺ that a man asked him ﷺ, "Which people are the best?" He said, "The best generation (qarn) is the one in which I am, then the second, then the third." (Muslim)

By qarn are meant the best people: the Prophet's own qarn refers to the noble Companions, the second qarn to the Successors, and the third to the qarn of their successors. All of them are called the "best generations" (khayr al-qurūn). It should be further clarified that when the motive and occasion for an act existed — while there was nothing to prevent it — and yet the Master of both worlds ﷺ did not do that act nor encourage it, and neither did the Companions, the Successors and their successors do it after him, then to do that act now will be called bidʿah, which is sheer misguidance.

Bidʿah occurs in both belief and practice, and it is not necessary that the Sharīʿah has explicitly forbidden it. For example, the noble kalimah "Lā ilāha illallāh, Muḥammadur Rasūlullāh" is dearer than life to every Muslim and is greatly commended; but the final phrase of the call to prayer (adhān) is "Lā ilāha illallāh." Now if someone, out of love and affection, were to join "Muḥammadur Rasūlullāh" to it — is there any harm in that? Any evil? And it is nowhere forbidden — yet clearly no one does so, because it would be a sheer bidʿah.

Likewise, in those important acts of worship for which the Sharīʿah has laid down no restriction, to impose a restriction of one's own, or to alter their manner, or to fix times or a particular method oneself, is also bidʿah in the terminology of the Sharīʿah. Similarly, to perform in some other place or time a thing that the Sharīʿah appointed for a particular place and time is also part of bidʿah.

A man sneezed in the presence of ʿAbdullāh bin ʿUmar (RA) and said, "Al-ḥamdu lillāh wa's-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh." Ibn ʿUmar (RA) said: "I too affirm 'Al-ḥamdu lillāh wa's-salāmu ʿalā Rasūlillāh,' but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not teach us this on the occasion of sneezing; rather he taught us 'Al-ḥamdu lillāhi ʿalā kulli ḥāl' (praise be to Allah in every state)." (Tirmidhī)

Clearly it will be said that Ibn ʿUmar (RA) stopped the man from reciting the ṣalāt upon the Prophet — which is certainly no sinful deed — but because on this occasion it was contrary to the teaching of the Prophet ﷺ, ʿAbdullāh bin ʿUmar (RA) forbade it.

A special mark of bidʿah is that it has no local uniformity: the bidʿah of every region and every land is different, whereas the Sunnah remains the same everywhere. Likewise there is much outward glitter and show in bidʿah, whereas by comparison there is simplicity in the Sunnah. Moreover, those who practise bidʿah are mostly heedless of the fundamental demands of the religion.

Bidʿah is such an evil and ill-omened thing that it destroys even the God-given light and capacity that is naturally within a person, and one effect of this ill-omen is that one is not even granted the ability to repent — for repentance is from sin, and clearly one who does a deed believing it to be a virtue will never repent of it.

If the above definition of bidʿah is kept in mind, then all those inventions — for example the radio, the loudspeaker and the like — and works such as the establishment of religious schools (madāris) and the various methods of propagating the religion, which did not exist in the best generations but are not adopted as though they were part of the religion, fall outside the sphere of bidʿah.
