English translation
It is narrated from Abū Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "The one who strives to help a weak, husbandless woman and a needy, destitute person is like one who exerts himself in the path of Allah." The narrator says that he ﷺ also said: "Such a person is like one who keeps night vigil and never tires of worship, or like one who fasts and never breaks the sequence of his fasts." (Bukhari and Muslim)
One of the greatest proofs that a nation is a living nation is that the hearts of its people are filled with the highest sentiments of love for humanity; and these very sentiments serve as evidence for whether that nation has the right to lead the world or not. In reality, the judgement of superiority and merit between individuals and nations is also made according to the marks they leave in this field.
Islam invites every capable person to do good, and this invitation is such that a rich man, a poor man, a labourer, a merchant, a landowner, a student, a teacher, a woman, a man, an old person, the blind, and the weak can all perform acts of goodness; their financial circumstances are no obstacle to doing good and beneficial works in society. In Islam there is no human being who cannot, in one way or another, do some good. Every person can do works of goodness and welfare according to his capacity. The wealthy will do good through their wealth and status, while the poor should do this work with their hand, their heart, and their tongue. In the time of the Prophet ﷺ some poor people complained to him that the wealthy had surged ahead of them in the field of goodness, because they were spending their wealth on public welfare and good works, while the poor had nothing to give in charity. To them the Prophet ﷺ explained that the means of doing good is not wealth alone; rather every act that benefits people is a good deed and a charity. He ﷺ said: "Your glorifying Allah once is charity; enjoining good is charity; forbidding evil is charity; removing a thorn or other harmful thing from the path is charity; making peace between two people is charity; and if you help a person mount his riding animal so that he mounts it with ease, that too is charity."
In this way Islam opens the doors of goodness for all the people of society. And this goodness and welfare is not only for co-religionists; rather Islam raises a person to that lofty station of love for humanity from which works of goodness become common to the whole of humankind, whatever their religion, language, country, or nationality. Our Prophet ﷺ says: People are Allah's dependents; the most beloved to Allah is the one who benefits His dependents the most. This is why Islam placed no restriction of religion on voluntary charity.
While inviting to this goodness and welfare, Islam also makes clear that its benefit will first of all reach the doer himself. In this world he will gain acceptance and love, and in the Hereafter reward and recompense. Allah Almighty says: "Whatever you spend is only for yourselves." (Qur'an)
This hadith is enough to dispel the misconception found among many pious people — that in religion prayer, fasting, and such acts of worship are everything, and that good deeds connected with serving the servants of God have no importance.
