English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) that during the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) the sun was eclipsed, so the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) led the people in prayer. In this prayer he stood for a very long time, then he went into ruku and made a very long ruku, then he stood up and again stood for a very long time, but this standing was somewhat shorter than the first standing; after that he went into ruku again and made a long ruku, but this ruku was somewhat shorter than the first ruku; then he went into prostration and made the prostration very long too. Then in the second rak'ah he did exactly as he had done in the first rak'ah. After that (following the rule, after the final sitting and the salam) he ended the prayer, and the sun came out of the eclipse and (as usual) became bright again. Then he delivered a sermon, and after praising and glorifying Allah he said in it: "The sun and the moon are two of the signs of Allah's power and craftsmanship; they are not eclipsed for the death or life of anyone (rather, like the rest of creation in the heavens and the earth, Allah's command governs them too, and their light and darkness are in the hand of the same Sovereign of sovereigns, the Absolutely Powerful). So when you see them being eclipsed, pray to Allah, proclaim His greatness, offer prayer before Him, and give charity." Then he said: "O Ummah of Muhammad! No one is as displeased by the misconduct of a slave or slave-girl as Allah is displeased by the misconduct of any of His male or female servants (so fear His wrath and majesty and keep away from every kind of sin and disobedience). O Ummah of Muhammad! By Allah, if you knew what I know (about Allah's wrath and majesty) you would laugh little and weep much." After that he said: "Beware! I have conveyed the message fully (and discharged my duty)."
Khusoof means the eclipse of the moon and kusoof the eclipse of the sun. When the sun or moon is eclipsed, occupy yourself with the remembrance of Allah, make supplication to Him, glorify and magnify Him, and give charity; through the blessing of such righteous deeds Allah averts calamities and afflictions. An eclipse of the sun or moon is one of those signs of Allah's overwhelming power and His majesty and might which appear from time to time, and whose due is that when they appear the servants of Allah should humbly bow before the greatness and majesty of that All-Powerful, All-Dominant Lord and beg Him for mercy and grace. During the blessed life of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), the sun was eclipsed on the very day that his infant son Ibrahim died at about one and a half years of age. Among the superstitions of the age of ignorance the Arabs also held the belief that the sun is eclipsed at the death of great men, as though it puts on a black shroud in mourning for them. The eclipse of the sun on the day of Ibrahim's death could have strengthened this superstition and false belief; indeed some reports show that this very notion came to the tongues of some people. At that time the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), with extraordinary awe and the utmost concern, led a two-rak'ah congregational prayer before Allah. This prayer too was of an unusual kind: he recited at great length, and during the recitation he would repeatedly bow before Allah (as though going into ruku) and then stand up again to recite; likewise he made the bowings and prostrations of this prayer very long, and during the prayer he supplicated with great earnestness. Afterwards he delivered a sermon in which he particularly refuted the false notion that the sun or moon is eclipsed because of the death of some great person. He said that this is mere ignorant superstition with no basis or reality; it is in fact a sign of Allah's power, majesty and might. When such a sign appears one should turn humbly toward Him, worship Him and supplicate to Him.
