English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Were it not that I would make it a hardship for my Ummah, I would command the Muslims to pray the Isha prayer later and to use the miswak (tooth-stick) for every prayer." (Bukhari and Muslim)
Among the things upon which the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) laid special emphasis and gave great stress in the matter of purity and cleanliness is the miswak. Every person of understanding today is aware to some degree of the medical benefits of the miswak and of the protection it provides from many diseases; but from the religious point of view its real importance is that it is an act that greatly pleases Allah Almighty.
As is learnt from this narration, the miswak greatly purifies and cleanses the mouth and is a thing that greatly pleases Allah Almighty. (with reference to the Musnad of Imam Shafi'i, the Musnad of Ahmad, Darimi and Nasa'i)
In this blessed hadith the Master of both worlds (peace be upon him) mentioned two things. The first is that "Were I not afraid that my Ummah would fall into difficulty, I would certainly command that all Muslims pray the Isha prayer with delay." The second thing he said about the miswak was that "were it not for the fear of difficulty and hardship in this matter too, I would announce that using the miswak be made obligatory at the time of every prayer."
But since the Prophet (peace be upon him) is wholly mercy and compassion toward his Ummah, he did not give these things the status of an obligatory duty (fard), lest, if they were obligatory, Muslims out of hardship and laziness might fail to act upon these obligations and consequently become sinful. Therefore he made them only recommended (mustahabb), so that if someone does not act upon them there will be no accountability upon him, whereas those servants of Allah who do act upon them — this will be for them a matter of complete felicity and good fortune.
In performing the miswak there is great good and blessing and much merit. Thus, from the study of the books of Hadith it is learnt that some forty narrations have come concerning the merit of using the miswak. Moreover, not only is using the miswak a cause of reward, but from it many physical benefits also accrue: by using the miswak the mouth remains pure and clean, no foul odour is produced in the mouth, the teeth become white and shining, strength is produced in the gums, and the teeth become firm.
In another narration the importance of the miswak has been stated in this way: the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said that "the angel Jibril (peace be upon him), whenever he came to me, every time urged me regarding the miswak, until I feared that (through excessive use of the miswak) I might wear away the front part of my mouth." (with reference to the Musnad of Ahmad)
The importance of the miswak in increasing the worth and value of prayer can be well gauged from this narration: a prayer performed after using the miswak is seventy degrees better and more excellent than a prayer performed without the miswak. (with reference to Bayhaqi, Hakim)
It is a general rule that in a task involving greater effort and toil, its worth and value and its reward and recompense are also greater; but this fact cannot be overlooked, that excellence, gracefulness and good taste are also very important things. A task can, with very little attention and effort, become very fine; then that little attention too will be of great importance. The matter of the miswak is somewhat of this kind: although there is no toil at all in it, yet it adds to the beauty and excellence of prayer, and man is to make ready and purify the mouth with which he is to converse in the court of the Lord.
