English translation
Narrated Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him): Once I was riding on the same mount behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, with nothing between me and him but the rear part of the camel's saddle-hump (that is, I was seated right up against him). As we rode along, he called to me and said, "Mu'adh ibn Jabal." I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, command me." After we had ridden on a little he said, "Mu'adh ibn Jabal." I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, command me." After we had ridden on a little more he said, "Mu'adh ibn Jabal." I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, command me." Then (the third time) he said, "Do you know what the right of Allah upon His servants is?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger ﷺ know best." He said, "The right of Allah upon His servants is that they worship Him alone and associate nothing with Him." After riding on a little further he said, "Mu'adh ibn Jabal." I said, "At your service, O Messenger of Allah, command me." He said, "Do you know what the right of the servants upon Allah is, when they fulfil His right?" I said, "Allah and His Messenger ﷺ know best." He said, "That He will not punish them."
The essence of this hadith is that the right of Allah upon His servants is that they worship Him and associate nothing with Him, and when the servants fulfil this right of Allah, then Allah has made it binding upon Himself, as their right, that He will not cast them into punishment.
