Abdullah ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said that it was rare for the Prophet ﷺ to rise from a gathering without making this supplication for his Companions (may Allah be pleased with them): “O Allah! Grant us such awe of You as will come between us and our sins; grant us such obedience to You as will bring us to Your Paradise; and grant us such certainty as will make it easy for us to bear the calamities of this world. O Allah! As long as You keep us alive, let us benefit from our hearing, our sight and our other faculties, and make these remain with us (that is, keep our senses sound throughout our lives); take vengeance on whoever wrongs us; help us against those who show us enmity; do not afflict us with any calamity in our religion; do not make this world our greatest concern nor the limit of our knowledge; and do not place over us any who will not show us mercy.”

Supplication is the servant's call and his request in the presence of Allah Most High. A believing servant calls upon none besides Allah; upon his tongue is only the remembrance of Allah, and his tongue remains devoted to declaring the greatness and majesty of the One God. In this act of his the whole of creation is in harmony with him. The believer asks only of his Lord, calls upon Him alone to fulfil his needs, lays his forehead only in His court, seeks guidance only from Him, presents his plea only before Him, and regards Him alone as his refuge and helper. This is his religion and his faith, and the religion he follows is in truth the religion of the entire creation. Allah Most High Himself says:
“All in the heavens and the earth ask of Him.” (Ar-Rahman: 29)
A believer has been commanded to call upon the one Allah alone and to attach his hopes to Him alone. To call upon the one Allah is part of the servitude and worship of Allah Most High; this expression of servanthood is itself worship — indeed the very spirit of worship. That is why the Master of both worlds ﷺ declared supplication to be the essence of worship, and it is for this reason that the Qur'an declares calling upon any other besides Allah Most High to be shirk and misguidance.

The believing servant strives to keep himself, in every state, attached to the mantle of Allah's mercy and forgiveness. He spreads out the hem of all his desires before the court of Allah Most High at all times. Whether in solitude or in company, in the mosque or in the marketplace, travelling or at home, in sickness or in health — in every state this practice of his continues, and he is always a seeker of aid and help from Allah Most High, just as Allah Most High says:
“Call upon your Lord humbly and in secret.” (Al-A'raf: 55)
The believing servant regards the ability to present his petitions, to whisper, and to converse intimately in the court of Allah Most High as a very great blessing.

From the supplications of the Prophet ﷺ we come to know how his ﷺ soul was bound to his Lord, and to what degree the awareness of his Lord's greatness and majesty overshadowed him ﷺ. There is no doubt that his ﷺ supplications are masterpieces of knowledge and gnosis, utterly comprehensive, and a shining proof of his ﷺ true and deep connection with Allah Most High. May Allah Most High grant us all the ability to be diligent in the supplications taught by the Glorious Qur'an and the Prophet ﷺ (Amin).
