English translation
It is narrated from Ubada ibn al-Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah ṣalla’llahu ʿalayhi wa-sallam said: “Whoever bears witness (that is, affirms with the tongue and knows to be true in the heart) that there is no god but Allah, who has no partner, and that Muhammad ṣalla’llahu ʿalayhi wa-sallam is indeed the servant and Messenger of Allah; and bears witness that Isa (Jesus, peace be upon him) too is the servant of Allah and His Messenger and the son of His handmaid (Maryam, peace be upon her) and His Word, which He cast towards Maryam, and a spirit sent from Him; and that Paradise and Hell are real — Allah Most High will surely admit him into Paradise, whatever his deeds may be.” (Bukhari & Muslim)

The gist of this hadith is that eternal salvation rests upon the soundness of faith and creed; no shortcoming in this can be excused. Weaknesses in deeds, however, may after the reckoning be forgiven — either after enduring their due punishment or through the mercy of Allah.

Since the foundation of faith is to affirm Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah) and to testify to it, this is placed first: that one should hold with sincere heart to the Oneness of Allah and to His godhood and lordship. After this comes the rank of prophethood, so it is necessary to believe in the messengership of the Messenger; likewise, believing in the messengership of all the Messengers is necessary for salvation.

Isa (peace be upon him) is mentioned here both as an example and for a particular reason: one group (the Christians) hold the belief that Isa is the son of God. To refute this false belief he is mentioned, and it is made clear that Isa is neither the son of God nor is God incarnate within him; rather he is the servant and Messenger of Allah, whom Allah created from the womb of His handmaid Maryam. That is why he is called “Kalimat Allah” (the Word of Allah), because his birth came about without a father, solely by Allah’s command “Be.” He is called “Ruh Allah” not because any part of Allah or the spirit of Allah is within him, but because by Allah’s command he used to bring the dead to life and would fashion birds from clay, breathe life into them, and make them fly.

Allah Most High says in the Qur’an: “The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a Messenger of Allah and His Word which He cast towards Mary, and a spirit from Him. So believe in Allah and His Messengers, and do not say ‘Three.’ Desist — it is better for you. Indeed, Allah alone is worthy of worship, exalted is He above having a son. To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth, and Allah is sufficient as a Disposer of affairs.” (an-Nisa 171)

It is plain from the Qur’an and this hadith that just as Allah created Adam by the word “Be,” and just as he was created without a mother and father, so too Isa was created by the word “Be” (the divine command) without a father. Thus it comes in one place in the Qur’an: “Indeed, the likeness of Isa before Allah is as the likeness of Adam: He created him from dust, then said to him ‘Be,’ and he was.” (Al Imran 59)

After the creed of Oneness and prophethood, belief in the Hereafter is also fundamental — that is, to believe and be certain that being raised again after death is true and that Paradise and Hell are real things. These are the beliefs which, when accepted with the heart, held to with sincere faith, and affirmed with pure intention, guarantee eternal salvation. If, while holding these beliefs, there are also shortcomings in deeds, even then this blessed hadith gives glad tidings of Paradise. But as far as the matter stands, it is settled that the shortcomings in deeds and the evil deeds committed will incur punishment; yet after the punishment is complete, he too will be admitted into Paradise. So this hadith should be understood in this sense: that if, after accepting these beliefs, one also did good deeds, followed the Shari‘ah, carried out all its commands, and did nothing contrary to the sacred law, he will be admitted into Paradise without any chastisement or punishment; and if, after accepting these beliefs, one did not do good deeds, did not observe the Shari‘ah, and did not obey the commands of Allah and His Messenger, he will endure the punishment of his sins but will in the end also be admitted into Paradise.

May Allah Most High grant us all sound faith and belief, and along with that keep us protected and safe from every kind of evil deed. Ameen!
