Ibn ʿUmar (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: “When a servant tells a lie, the (guardian) angel moves a mile away from him because of the foul smell of what he has uttered.” (Tirmidhi)

This hadith shows the severe condemnation of lying and tells us that the angels utterly detest falsehood — they are so revolted by it that the moment a lie leaves a person's mouth the angel departs from there and moves a mile away. It should be understood that this refers to angels other than those who record deeds — such as the guardian angels; all the angels feel this aversion and revulsion, but those charged with recording deeds endure the unpleasantness out of necessity. How evil an act it is to cause distress to Allah's beloved creatures — reflect on this yourself — and the sin of lying is over and above that.

Just as material things have a fragrance or a stench, so do a person's deeds and words have their own fragrance or stench. Because materialism dominates us, we perceive the stench of rotten, decayed things but fail to perceive the stench of things whose stench is many times greater. Likewise we notice the fragrance of flowers, but we are unable to perceive the fragrance and delight beside which ordinary fragrances and pleasures are nothing; the charms of ordinary colour and scent draw our hearts, yet we depart this world remaining heedless of the charms of reality and of the soul.

The senses of the angels are very fine and keen, so they perceive even the fragrance or stench of our good and evil deeds, and they flee far away because of the stench of lying. That Allah's honoured creatures should flee from us because of the stench of our falsehood — how shameful this is for us! Yet we are not even aware that Allah's angels, who are His nearest and luminous creation, are pained by our evils and, instead of drawing near us, flee from us. It should be kept in mind here that this pure creation flees from us not only because of lying, but also because of the stench of backbiting, foul speech and the like. Besides the angels, among human beings too, whoever's spirituality prevails over his materialism can perceive the fragrance or stench of deeds.

Man is not merely a body but also possesses a soul — indeed in essence he is the soul, which is entirely free of matter. So to regard matter alone as everything is nothing but short-sightedness. Just as benefit and loss, comfort and pain, pleasure and displeasure, light and darkness, lowliness and loftiness, and beauty and ugliness are felt in the non-material world too, the beauty and excellence we see in material things bears no comparison to the beauty found in things that are free of matter. We are troubled by the stench of decayed things, but this stench is nothing compared to the stench that reaches the soul from that which is most distressing to it. So what is needed is that we become acquainted with the blessings and pleasures of faith and the soul — the real ones — more than with material pleasures, and thus save ourselves from deprivation in this world and the Hereafter.

So it is incumbent upon the believing servants always to speak the truth and to adhere to truth alone, to teach their children truth too and instil the habit of truthfulness in them; even a promise made to pacify them should be a truthful promise. For this hadith makes it fully clear that the worldly harm of lying is that the angels appointed to guard the person flee from him — and the ruin and punishment of the Hereafter are over and above that.
