English translation
Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: "The truth is that if you were to rely upon Allah and trust in Him as He deserves to be relied upon, He would surely provide for you just as He provides for the birds: they go out hungry in the morning and return in the evening with full bellies (to their nests)."
The right of trust (tawakkul) is that, first, one should have complete certainty and conviction that there is none who brings anything into existence except Allah the Exalted; that every single thing — whether animate or inanimate, the sustenance of a creature, the gaining or not gaining of a thing, loss or profit, poverty and destitution or wealth and abundance, sickness or health, death or life — in short, whatever it may be, Allah is the Master of it all and all things are from Him alone. Then one must firmly believe that, without any doubt, the Guarantor of sustenance is Allah the Exalted; and then, along with this certainty and conviction, one should occupy oneself in earning a livelihood by good means and in a proper, reasonable manner — that is, without excessive grief and anxiety in one's work and earning, without falling into greed and covetousness, without striving to acquire more than one needs, and without drowning in the pursuit of gain to the point of forgetting the purpose of one's life in this world and losing the ability to distinguish between the lawful and the unlawful.
To understand this hadith correctly, reflect on this verse of the Holy Qur'an and what it invites us to: "There is no creature that moves upon the earth but that its sustenance is upon Allah." (Hud: 6) That is, Allah alone is the sustainer; every creature that walks upon the earth — whether human or jinn, beast or bird, a creature of the sea or of the land — He provides each one its food according to its needs.
In another place the Qur'an expresses the same theme thus: "How many a moving creature there is that does not carry its own provision; Allah provides for it and for you, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing." (al-Ankabut: 60) The meaning is that animals cannot store anything, so sustenance is not confined to any particular place; rather Allah's provision is general for all His creation — whoever and wherever they are, whether strong or weak, whether furnished with means and resources or deprived of them, whether at home or far from it. The same Allah is the Provider of all, who conveys provision to the ant in the crevices of the earth, to the birds in the air, and to the fish and other sea-creatures in the depths of the ocean.
From these verses and from this saying of the Master of both worlds (ﷺ) it is known that Allah is the Protector and Guardian of His devoted servants; He watches over them, He fully understands their needs, and He never abandons them to helplessness and destitution like orphans. He fulfils their needs in this world; He does not merely provide for their material needs but grants His faithful ones a life that is most pure — neither their present life is dark nor their future dark. They remain aware, and their true earning is the consciousness of a God-fearing, pure life; they keep seeking lawful and wholesome provision, but their real reliance is not upon their own effort but upon Allah the Exalted.
The upshot is that if the children of Adam were to place such trust and reliance upon Allah in the matter of sustenance as they ought to, then Allah's dealing with them would be that — just as He provides for the sparrows and birds with ease, so that without the hard toil and labour of men, by only slight movement, they go out with empty bellies in the morning and return to their nests with full bellies in the evening — likewise Allah would convey provision to these people with ease, and they would not have to undergo the great striving and struggle that they do.
But here too it must be well understood that the meaning of tawakkul is not to abandon effort and striving to obtain sustenance. It is the Muslim's duty to struggle to earn a livelihood; but his reliance should not be upon his own toil and labour, rather upon the Lord of Majesty, and he should hold the conviction that all affairs are in Allah's hand and that provision is from Allah alone.
