English translation
Hazrat Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “When one of you is invited (to a meal), he should accept the invitation. Then, if the one invited is fasting, let him make supplication for the host, and if he is not fasting, let him eat with him.” (Tirmidhi)
Islam places great emphasis on the deep mutual bond among Muslims. Among its teachings is that the Muslims are like a single body: the comfort or pain of one part of the body is the comfort or pain of the whole body. But the matter is not confined to teaching alone; practical measures for achieving it exist alongside it. Thus inviting one another to a meal is also a means of attaining and strengthening this bond.
In this hadith the Prophet (peace be upon him) drew attention to the point that when you are invited, accept the invitation. Accepting an invitation is a right of the Muslim. In another hadith five rights of one Muslim over another are mentioned, one of which is accepting an invitation. Hence accepting an invitation is a Sunnah act. The invitation should be accepted with the intention that it will please one’s Muslim brother, or with the intention that one is going to meet one’s Muslim brother; in that case one becomes among those who love one another purely for the sake of Allah. In accepting an invitation one should not look at whether the host is rich or poor. However, accepting an invitation is a Sunnah only when it does not lead one into some sin — for example, one should not accept an invitation where there is a mixed gathering of men and women. There are great merits in feeding one’s Muslim brother. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that the best of you is the one who feeds others (reported by Ahmad). Likewise he said that in Paradise there are such clear-walled chambers that from outside one can see what is inside and from inside what is outside, and they are for those who speak gently, feed others, and pray at night when people are asleep (reported by Tirmidhi). Similarly he said that whoever gives his brother enough food to fill his stomach and enough water to quench his thirst, Allah will distance him from Hell by seven trenches, the distance between two of which is a journey of five hundred years (Tabarani).
Regarding these merits one should remember that they will be attained only when the purpose of the invitation is to follow Allah and His Messenger; if the intention is merely to keep up a custom, then it is not an invitation but a custom, upon which any hope of reward is vain.
One should also bear in mind that the purpose of an invitation is a mutual expression of love, which need not necessarily be through pilaf, qorma and luxurious foods. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that if someone were to invite me even to the trotters of a goat, I would accept (reported by Bukhari). It is attributed to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man invited him. He said: I accept your invitation on three conditions — first, that you bring nothing from the market for me; second, that you present whatever is in the house; third, that you do not leave nothing for your household. Hazrat Salman (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded that we should not trouble ourselves for a guest with something we do not have, but should place before him whatever is available.
In the above hadith the Prophet (peace be upon him) said that if the one invited is fasting, he should supplicate for the host. In the opinion of some scholars, if the fast is a voluntary (nafl) one, then in order to accept a Muslim brother’s invitation and to please him he may break the voluntary fast; this too is permitted. However, he should later make up (qada) that fast.
