English translation
Narrated by Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “Paradise is nearer to you than the strap of your sandal, and so too is the Fire.”

All the messengers and prophets who came from Allah, and all the scriptures revealed to them, have declared this reality with complete clarity and detail: that the real life is the life of the Hereafter, and man's eternal homeland is either Paradise or Hell. Paradise is the ultimate manifestation of Allah's attribute of mercy, grace and generosity, and the complete manifestation of these beautiful attributes will appear only there; likewise Hell is the ultimate manifestation of Allah's wrath and anger, and the complete manifestation of these majestic attributes too will appear only there.

Whatever Allah's prophets and Allah's books have told mankind about this is, without doubt, entirely true, and it will unfold in exactly the manner they described. To imagine that, just as elders tell young, ignorant children many baseless things in order to frighten or threaten them or to arouse in them some longing and eagerness, so too Allah's prophets and the books they brought have described the reward and punishment of Paradise and Hell, is an utterly foolish notion. It would be like someone saying that what these prophets stated about the being of Allah, or what they told about the Day of Judgement, is also merely for frightening and coaxing, and otherwise has no reality at all.

Since the Holy Qur'an is Allah's final book, and after it no book is to be revealed for the guidance of mankind, because this book was revealed to Allah's final Prophet, Muhammad (peace be upon him), therefore, like other subjects, the account of Paradise and Hell too has been given in it in full detail and in such abundance that it is certainly more than sufficient to create in people the urge to do good and the concern to avoid evil, provided that a person's heart has not become dead.

The Prophet of both worlds (peace be upon him) too, in his sayings, has guided the Ummah about this in the utmost detail.

The meaning of this blessed hadith is that neither is Paradise far from man nor is Hell far from him. If his deeds are good, it is as though Paradise has drawn near to him; nothing stands between him and Paradise except a single outward veil; after departing from this world his abode will be in the expanses of Paradise. And if his deeds are evil, then instead of Paradise, Hell is nearer to him; there is no great distance between him and Hell; if he does not mend his ways, nothing can save him from falling into Hell. Rather, the reality of Paradise and Hell is our own good and evil deeds; this is why a deep correspondence and resemblance is found between deeds and their reward and punishment. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) himself said:

“Beware! All good deeds and virtues, together with all that surrounds them, are in Paradise; beware! All evils, together with all that surrounds them, are in Hell. So act, and keep fearing Allah, and know that you must be presented with your deeds; so whoever does even an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does even an atom's weight of evil will see it.” (Al-Hadith)

This phrase — “whoever does an atom's weight of good will see it, and whoever does an atom's weight of evil will see it” — is taken from Surah az-Zilzal. The same point has come in the Holy Qur'an at another place in these words: “On that Day you will be brought forth; nothing of yours will remain hidden.” (Al-Haqqah 18)
