English translation
Narrated by Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: “The generous person is near to Allah (that is, he has attained nearness to Allah), and is near to Allah's servants (that is, because of his attribute of generosity Allah's servants feel attachment and love for him and keep his company), and he is near to Paradise and far from Hell. And the miser and stingy person is far from Allah (that is, he is deprived of the blessing of nearness to Allah), and is far from Allah's servants too (because, on account of his stinginess, they keep aloof and detached from him), and he is far from Paradise and near to Hell. And without doubt, an ignorant generous person is dearer to Allah than a miserly worshipper.”

Generosity — that is, spending one's earnings on others and getting others' needs met — is likewise a branch of mercy, just as miserliness and stinginess — that is, not spending on others and being of no use to others — is a form of mercilessness and hard-heartedness. Concerning both of these there is mention at many places in the Holy Qur'an.

Concerning generosity, Allah says in one place: “And whatever you spend, Allah will repay it to you.” (Saba 39)

In contrast, concerning miserliness it comes thus: “But as for the one who is miserly and considers himself self-sufficient and denies the good, We shall ease him toward hardship (that is, set him on a path whose end is evil), and his wealth will not avail him when he perishes (or when he falls into Hell).” (Al-Layl 8–11)

The successful person in the world is only he who has attained nearness to Allah and is also well-regarded by people, who is deserving of Paradise and safe and secure from Allah's punishment or from Hell. Munificence and generosity bring a person near to Allah; people too love the generous and open-handed. Now, when someone has attained nearness to Allah, and the servants of Allah too have no complaint against him, then what doubt can there be about his being of the people of Paradise? However, the condition is that there be no such fault in his life on account of which all a person's deeds are laid waste — such as disbelief, polytheism, hypocrisy, ostentation, and the like.

Munificence is a special attribute of Allah; how can He grant His nearness to a miser? A miser, on account of his miserliness, also falls from the esteem of people; then Paradise too cannot be awaiting such a person. Being deserving of Paradise is attained through good character, and the people of Paradise can only be those who stand at the loftiest station of character; but the miser and tight-hearted person is devoid of character. If a miser's miserliness can bring him near to anything, it is the wrath of Allah and the blazing fire of Hell.

In another narration it comes thus: that greed and miserliness and faith can never gather in one heart (that is, stinginess and miserliness have no connection with faith). (On the authority of Sunan an-Nasa'i)

The meaning is that there is such a contradiction between the reality of faith and the habit of miserliness that the heart which is granted true faith cannot admit miserliness, and in whichever heart miserliness is seen, it should be understood that in it there is no light of faith. With a little reflection, everyone can grasp this point: that after complete faith and certainty in the being and attributes of Allah, no room at all can remain in the heart for a trait like miserliness and stinginess.

The meaning of the final words of the blessed hadith is that the ignorant generous and open-handed person attains that which is really desired in life — namely, expansiveness of soul, cheerfulness of heart, and beautiful character — whereas the miserly worshipper is deprived of it; he may be called a worshipper, but he cannot be the possessor of any lofty character. May Allah protect the Ummah of Muhammad (peace be upon him) from an evil attribute like miserliness. Amin.
