English translation
Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) reports that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said that Allah says: “O son of Adam, free yourself for My worship; I will fill your breast with contentment and remove your poverty. If you do not do so, I will fill your breast with worldly worries and will not remove your poverty from you.” (Ibn Majah)
Islam is the name of living for the sake of Allah and dying for His sake, and a Muslim is one who keeps his gaze always fixed upon the Hereafter and never prefers the world over it. This does not at all mean that he cannot lead a prosperous and dignified life in this world, individually and collectively. Islam richly bestows worldly success upon its followers. Wealth, honour and power — which are called worldly success — are not, in the sight of religion, evil things; rather they are blessings of Allah and His grace, to have a connection with which and to benefit from which is not against religion. Allah says:
“Seek forgiveness of your Lord; indeed He is Most Forgiving. (If you do so) He will send rain upon you in abundance, and grant you wealth and children, and provide you with lush gardens, and make rivers flow for you.” (Nuh 10-11)
In Surah al-A'raf, verse 96, it is said:
“And had the people of the towns believed and been mindful (of Allah), We would surely have opened upon them blessings from the heaven and the earth.”
In Surah al-Nur, verse 55, it is said:
“Allah has promised those of you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will surely grant them authority in the land, just as He granted authority to those before them, and that He will firmly establish for them their religion which He has chosen for them.”
The basic condition of all these promises and glad tidings is to turn to one's Lord and to make seeking His pleasure one's aim. This is Allah's promise that, in return for obeying and serving Him, He will grant — along with success in the Hereafter — comfort, honour and power in this world too. In contrast, the end of not following the religion and not treading the path of seeking His pleasure is disgrace and failure.
In short, Islam richly bestows worldly success too upon its followers. However, religion certainly restrains man from all those things that make him heedless of Allah and careless of the demands of His religion, and the condemnation of that (kind of) world too has been stated in the Qur'an and Hadith. But those things that prove helpful in fulfilling the demands of religion are in every way desirable and sought.
It should also be understood here that Allah's dealing with the Muslim and the disbeliever is different. Despite all his disobedience, the disbeliever can progress in this world, but for the Muslim there is only one path of success and prosperity, and that is the path of Islam, the path of obedience to Allah. This is because in this world the Muslim is the standard-bearer of Allah's religion and its caller, as a result of which his responsibilities and rights are entirely distinct from those of the disbelievers, and this distinction demands that the standards of his reward and punishment too be different. This is, as it were, the difference between one's own and a stranger.
The history of our age too bears witness to this fact — that despite all the prosperity of the West we have no standing in the world; and be assured that the honour and progress we are seeking in the prosperity of the West will never be attained. The matter is simply this: a person or nation that loses its own identity is itself bent on ruining its own honour — so why would anyone else honour it?
“When you bowed before strangers, neither your body nor your soul was yours —
this saying of the Qalandar made me utterly ashamed.”
