English translation
Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says that the Messenger of Allah said: “Among Allah's servants there will be some who are neither prophets nor martyrs, yet because of their rank with Allah the prophets and martyrs will envy them.” The people asked: O Messenger of Allah, tell us, who will they be? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “They will be people who loved one another for the sake of Allah, although there was no kinship between them, nor did they give one another wealth. By God, light will be radiating from their faces and they will be mounted upon light. On the Day when people will be trembling with fear, they will have no fear, and when people are grief-stricken and distressed, they will have no grief.” (Abu Dawud)

Islam has given great importance to relationships. Through them we keep a bond with a number of people, exert our influence upon them and also receive influence from them, and these people remain very close to our lives for a long time. If the basis of these relationships is sincerity and being for Allah and a good aim, then Allah grants them acceptance and blessing; otherwise He casts them back into the faces of those very people.
“On that Day friends will be enemies of one another, except the God-fearing (who will remain friends of one another). O My servants, today you have no fear, nor will any grief befall you.” (Az-Zukhruf 67-68)
The first condition of the best friendship is that it be free of self-interest and motives, adopted for the sake of pure truth, and grow up under the shade of faith and ihsan — this is the meaning of loving for the sake of Allah. But if friendship or connection arises from being impressed by someone's ability and personality, or for some other reason, then this will be some other kind of love and friendship; it will not be called love purely for the sake of Allah.
When a person keeps the lamp of faith and certainty alight in his heart — his breast illumined by the truth of Islam and his tongue kept fresh by its sweetness — then he sees all the people of the world in the light of the very creed that he has made his own. He loves for the sake of principle, not for any self-interest, and hates on the basis of principles, not out of compulsion or disappointment. But this is not within everyone's power, nor is it a thing to claim. For this it is necessary that a person first gain a correct recognition (ma'rifah) of his Lord, then this recognition increase to such a degree that in his heart the standing of other things diminishes completely and he becomes absorbed in the Being of Allah; at that time it will be correct to say that he now loves and hates solely for the sake of Allah.
One friend has a deep influence upon another. That is why it is necessary to show great prudence in choosing friends and to examine them well, so that one may be reassured about them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
“A man follows the way of his friend, so a man should look at whom he is befriending.” (Abu Dawud)
The habit of cigarette smoking too is mostly adopted by a person because of his friends. Our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has made this evil influence clear with an example. He said: “The likeness of good company is that of a perfume-seller: even if he gives you nothing, at least its fragrance will surely reach you. The likeness of bad company is that of a blacksmith's furnace: even if you are safe from its soot, its smoke will in any case get into your nostrils.” (Abu Dawud)
If friends are such as help in the demands of religion, then they are the best friends; their friendship should be adopted and their love should certainly be adopted. But those friends who call towards misguidance and evil deeds, and from whom there is fear of deception and treachery — one should avoid them. A true friend shows the path to success in this world and the Hereafter, whereas a misguiding friend ultimately becomes a means of ruin. Allah says:
“On the Day when the wrongdoer will bite his hands and say: Would that I had taken a path with the Messenger! O my misery! Would that I had not taken so-and-so as a friend! He led me astray from the Reminder (the Book) after it had come to me — and Satan is ever a betrayer of man.” (Al-Furqan 27-29)
