English translation
Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Eat the pre-dawn meal (sahri), for indeed in eating sahri there is blessing.' (Bukhari and Muslim)
For fasting there is a promise of reward and recompense so great that none can even conceive of it, because it is a worship of much toil and considerable endurance, patience, and effort. To hold oneself back, from true dawn until sunset, from eating, drinking, and acting upon the demand of the self's marital desire is no ordinary thing; it requires much patience, endurance, and hardship, and in worship the reward and recompense come in proportion to the endurance and hardship. In principle the ruling for fasting was that after going to sleep at night, eating, drinking, and so forth would become impermissible, and even at the time of sahri there would be no permission to eat or drink — as this same ruling holds among the People of the Book, and this was also the ruling at the beginning of Islam. But it is the special mercy and particular kindness of Allah the Exalted that He granted permission for sahri, and for His beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)'s Ummah He showed a special grace and favour, and made eating sahri not merely permissible but even promised reward for taking care to observe it.
The blessing of sahri has one outward and general aspect: by it the fasting person gains strength, and keeping the fast becomes less a cause of extra weakness and difficulty. The second aspect is one of faith and religion: if the practice of eating sahri were not to remain, or if the leading and select ones of the Ummah were not to eat sahri, then there is the danger that the common people might come to regard this as the ruling of the Shariah, or at least as preferable and superior, and thus the prescribed bounds of the Shariah would be altered. In previous nations, alterations occurred in just this way. So one blessing of sahri, and one great religious benefit, is that it is a means of protection against alterations of this kind; and for this reason it is beloved to Allah the Exalted and a cause of His pleasure and mercy.
In one narration it comes that there is blessing in sahri, so never abandon it; if there is nothing (to eat), then at that time one should drink just a single gulp of water, because Allah the Exalted sends mercy upon those who eat and drink at sahri, and the angels supplicate good for them. (Reported by Musnad Ahmad)
To rise at the time of sahri and eat sahri is a Sunnah practice, even if only a little is eaten; but there is blessing in this meal, and by eating at that time its strength and energy will remain throughout the day. Contrary to this, whoever eats and drinks at night and goes to sleep so as not to have to rise for sahri, or eats sahri very early and does not eat in his last hours, hunger and thirst will soon begin to torment him, because in both these cases the interval of remaining hungry and thirsty grows longer, which will certainly cause difficulty to the fasting person. Glory be to Allah! How, in the teachings of Islam, appropriate directions have been given while taking into account the weaknesses of man. In another narration it comes: eat sahri to gain strength for the fast, and take a midday rest to gain help for rising in the last part of the night. (Al-Hadith)
How wonderful a thing it is that in eating sahri there is the servant's own benefit, yet with Allah the Exalted there is reward and recompense for it as well. The time of sahri is a time of the acceptance of supplication, and in sahri too it is better that it be done in the last portion of the night — as in one narration it comes: my Ummah's affairs will remain good so long as they do not delay iftar but hasten it, and do not hasten sahri but delay it. (Reported by Musnad Ahmad)
The benefit of taking sahri at the recommended time is this: the servant finishes sahri just as the time for the Fajr prayer arrives, and thus the regular observance of the congregation is also maintained. Contrary to this, people nowadays stay awake late into the night and eat something before going to sleep, and make no arrangement or care for the Fajr congregational prayer, and sometimes the time of Fajr does not even remain and the sun rises. As one narration makes evident, the practice of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in eating sahri was such that between the sahri and the Fajr prayer there was the interval of reciting fifty verses. (Reported by Bukhari and Muslim)
From this it becomes known that eating sahri at the very last time is the way of the Sunnah; nevertheless it should be eaten before true dawn, and the interval of fifty verses is roughly ten minutes. Therefore, keeping these virtues and blessings of sahri in view, every Muslim should take special care of sahri according to its Sunnah time, so that along with following this Sunnah he may also oppose (the practice of) the Jews and Christians — because one aspect of the blessing and benefit of sahri is also the safeguarding of a bound of the Shariah.
