English translation
Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out from Madinah towards Makkah, and on the way he (peace be upon him) kept fasting continuously, until he reached the place of 'Usfan (from there he stopped fasting, and in order to make this matter clear to everyone) he (peace be upon him) called for water, then took the water in his hand and raised it up so that everyone could see (after which he drank it), and then he did not fast until he reached Makkah, (and all this happened in the month of Ramadan). And Ibn Abbas used to say (on this basis) that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) both kept fasts on a journey and also broke them, so (there is latitude) that whoever wishes may keep the fast on a journey and whoever wishes may break it.
The journey to Makkah mentioned in this blessed hadith was the journey of the Conquest of Makkah, which took place in Ramadan of the year 8 AH. On this journey the Prophet (peace be upon him) kept fasting at the start; when he reached the place of 'Usfan (which was a spring about 71 miles before Makkah), there he (peace be upon him) took the water in his hand and raised it high so that people would know that in the state of travel it is permissible to break the fast, or else the purpose was that the other people too should break their fast in following him (peace be upon him). From this conduct of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) on this journey, it is learned that as long as there is no such benefit in breaking the fast, keeping the fast is preferable; that is why he (peace be upon him) kept fasting continuously up to 'Usfan. Had breaking the fast on a journey been preferable even without any special reason, he (peace be upon him) would have broken it from the very start of the journey. In another narration it comes that Allah has suspended half the prayer for the traveler (that is, there is shortening on a journey); likewise He has exempted the traveler, the nursing woman and the pregnant woman from fasting (Abu Dawud, Tirmidhi, Nasa'i and Ibn Majah). A traveler may leave the fast on a journey; then when he becomes resident, making it up is obligatory. Likewise the nursing woman and the pregnant woman are also exempted from fasting, but after the excuse (is removed) making it up is obligatory. Glory be to Allah! How easy the religion is, and how mindful of the welfare of the human race, that even the protection of the nursing woman's child and the pregnant woman's fetus is kept in view.
Where the Glorious Qur'an announces the obligation of the fasts of Ramadan, there too permission has been given to the sick and to travelers not to fast in Ramadan, and it has been commanded that they complete their fasts after the journey and the illness; and there too it is stated that this permission and dispensation has been given for the ease and comfort of the servants. Allah says: "And whoever among you witnesses the month of Ramadan, let him fast the whole of that month; and whoever is sick or on a journey, then upon him is (to complete) the number in other days. Allah desires ease for you and does not desire hardship for you." (Al-Baqarah: 185) From this verse it becomes clear that this dispensation has been given for the ease and comfort of the servants and to save them from constriction and hardship. Therefore, if a person, despite being on a journey, feels no difficulty or hardship for himself in fasting, he may keep the fast, and if he wishes he may act upon the dispensation. The matter of fasting is not like prayer, in which every traveler must necessarily shorten the prayer, otherwise he would be sinful. Since the conduct of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) is a model and example for the community, therefore in the matter of fasting he (peace be upon him) sometimes kept the fast on a journey and sometimes broke it, as is known from this blessed hadith; and its wisdom was precisely this: that the members of the community may act, according to their respective circumstances, in whatever way they wish. And Allah knows best!
