English translation
It is narrated from Abdullah bin Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), tell me about jihad and battle" (that is, for which jihad reward is obtained and in which case a warrior is deprived of the reward of his deed). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abdullah, if you fought with the intention of the reward of the Hereafter and remained steadfast to the end, then you will receive the reward of your deed with Allah, and your name will be written in the list of the patient. And if you fought to show off to people and to boast, then on the Day of Resurrection Allah will raise you up in that very state. O Abdullah, upon whatever intention you fight and in whatever state you are killed, in that very state Allah will raise you up on the Day of Resurrection." (Abu Dawud)
One should know that without knowledge and action, success in this world and the Hereafter cannot be attained — because without knowledge a person cannot be aware of Allah's will, as a result of which he may fall prey to His wrath in this world and the Hereafter. As for action, it too is acceptable in the court of Allah only when it is done purely to seek His pleasure. In short, action without good intention is mere toil, and intention without sincerity is show and sin.
Intention is the name of the heart's resolve. The foundations of deeds are intentions. A deed depends on intention for its being good. Sincerity (ikhlas) means that a good deed done solely for the pleasure of Allah should contain no showing off, no worldly purpose, no seeking of fame, no compensation, and the like.
The endurance and blessing of a deed depend on sincerity of intention. Without sincerity, in Islam neither is worship accepted, nor do conduct and dealings attain the rank of worship. Therefore it is necessary that whenever we begin any work, we keep our intention pure and clean of any insincere aim and purpose. In the Holy Qur'an, sincerity has also been expressed as piety (taqwa), as Allah says:
{Neither the flesh of the sacrifices reaches Allah nor their blood, but what reaches Him is the piety of your hearts.} (al-Hajj)
Allah does not eat or drink; He is free of need of all these things. He looks only at the piety and sincerity of our hearts — with what resolve and intention this deed is done. If there is sincerity and piety in the hearts, He is pleased, otherwise not — as the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah does not look at your bodies and forms, but He looks at your hearts." (Muslim)
Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked what sincerity is. He said: sincerity is that a person should not desire that people praise him, but rather his heartfelt wish should be that Allah accept his deed and be pleased with it. Working with sincerity of intention brings success in both worlds, this world and the Hereafter. Everyone loves a sincere person, and fame comes to him without his seeking it. Such people are counted among the benefactors of all. People benefit from the spring of their sincerity. Even a little of their good deeds is enough. May Allah grant us all this blessing. Amin.
Reward is obtained upon a pure and true intention even if the deed cannot be accomplished. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: whoever comes to his bed and intends to get up at night and pray Tahajjud, but he falls asleep and his eyes do not open until morning, then what he intended is recorded for him, and the sleep is a gift from his Lord (Nasa'i). It is by the blessing of this good intention that the reward of Tahajjud was written in his record of deeds even though he slept all night; and if he even dies in that state of sleep, he will be counted among those who pray Tahajjud — because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: people will be raised on the Day of Resurrection according to their intentions (Ibn Majah). Contrary to this, a deed in which there is no sincerity of intention but rather worldly interests are attached to it is nothing but fruitless toil, and rather becomes a cause of punishment in the Hereafter, even if in this world one attains his objective.
