English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day there was an Arab bow in the hand of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He saw a man in whose hand was a Persian bow. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Throw it away.” And pointing towards the Arab bow he said: “Take this one, which is like it, and keep spears too, because Allah the Exalted will help your religion by means of this bow and spear, and by means of it you will conquer lands.”

Dress, language, appearance and style, drink, food and festivals — these are the very expression of a people’s distinctiveness. A living nation does not establish its own civilisation and traditions by begging and borrowing from outsiders; rather these are nurtured in the shade of its own experiences and thought. In reality, the civilisation of every nation is a mirror of its fundamental beliefs and ideas. The foundation of Islamic civilisation is the creed of Tawhid (the Oneness of Allah) and the messengership of Muhammad (peace be upon him). Whatever Allah and His Messenger (peace be upon him) have declared is what is worthy of being followed by us.
As Muslims, we take pride in the fact that our religion grants us a complete system of life. Whether it is life inside the home or outside the home, whether the matter is one of social conduct or of economics, whether the issue is the system of law or of politics, Islam grants guidance and direction on every single occasion. And after giving all this, Islam demands complete following and complete submission. It demands acting not upon a half or a part but upon the whole religion. Thus Allah the Exalted has commanded:
“O you who believe! Enter fully and completely into the religion.” (Qur’an)
In this connection it forbids adopting, without need, the ways and customs of other nations — especially those things that are a religious emblem of some people, such as their festivals like the Christians’ Christmas, the Hindus’ Holi, and so on. However, things that are neither the national custom nor the religious custom of other nations — such as their inventions and items of general need like the watch, medicines, conveyances, the telephone, weapons and the like, for which there is no substitute among our own people — their use is permissible.
Thus in the above hadith the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded that the Persian bow be exchanged for the Arab bow, even though apparently there is no special difference in the bow; but the demand of religious honour is that when we have something of our own, why should we beg for it from others? But this point will not be understood by the one who is devoid of honour and self-respect. In the eyes of such a person there is only one way of progress, and that is imitation — whereas even a man of ordinary understanding will never pay for a copy the price that the original commands. But the fact is that whoever abandons the path of Allah and His Messenger loses his reason too.
In truth, a person abandons his own way and manner and adopts the way and manner of others willingly only when his heart inclines towards it. Real slavery is the slavery of the heart and mind. A person who, in his thinking, thought and style, is dependent upon and an imitator of others — you may say whatever you like about him, but you certainly cannot call him free; this is why Allamah Iqbal said: free the intellect from slavery.
This religion is very self-respecting in the matter of blind imitation and resemblance. It comes in a narration that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: the presence of the turban over the caps is a distinction between us and the polytheists (al-Hadith), because the polytheists used to tie only a turban. This is the call of this religion — to maintain your national identity and distinctiveness in every way; but today its followers hurl a thousand questions at its instructions in this manner, that a cap can also be worn without the turban, i.e. the pagri — yet why should the nation that has been sent to lead the world adopt resemblance to the rebels against Allah?
Regarding the fast of Ashura it comes that one should not fast only on the tenth of Muharram but should fast for two days, i.e. (the ninth and tenth, or the tenth and eleventh); and its wisdom too the Master of both worlds (peace be upon him) stated to be keeping oneself distinct from the Jews.
