English translation
It is narrated from Hazrat Miqdad (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say: “No house upon the face of the earth — whether of clay or of a tent — will remain but that Allah the Exalted will cause the word of Islam to enter it, with the honour of an honoured one or with the humiliation of a humbled one. (Thus those who accept this word gladly and with a sincere heart) Allah the Exalted will make honoured and will declare worthy of this word; and (those who do not accept it gladly) Allah the Exalted will humiliate, and those people will be compelled to be obedient and submissive to this word.” I said, (hearing this), “Then the religion of Allah alone will prevail on every side.”
According to the learned scholars, ‘the earth’ in this blessed hadith means the Arabian Peninsula; but in another narration it comes thus, that the Messenger of Allah said to his uncle (Abu Talib): O uncle, I ask of the people the acceptance of only one word. That word is such that if these people accept it, the whole land of Arabia will come under their authority, and the non-Arab peoples will pay them tribute (jizyah). Hearing this the people were startled and said: you ask for one word — we are ready to accept ten words (statements); tell us, what is that word? Abu Talib too repeated this: tell us, what is that word? He said: that word is ‘La ilaha illa Allah’ (there is no god but Allah). (Musnad Ahmad, Nasa’i).
Bear in mind that this call is being given in Makkah al-Mukarramah at a time when those who believed in Islam were only a handful, and it is being given to those Bedouins of Arabia whose condition Hali described thus:
Civilisation had cast no shadow upon them, / progress had not set its foot even that far.
These very people, who until yesterday were the dust of the road, began to heed the call of this word, and, following their Prophet step by step, rose up — and then the state of affairs was this:
Not only the wilderness — we left not even the desert (untraversed); / into the sea of darkness we drove our horses.
The word of Tawhid, ‘La ilaha illa Allah’, is not merely a single word — it is the call of a whole system. Its purpose is not merely that we adopt a few acts of worship. Rather it is a demand upon a person to do everything in accordance with the will of the Master. It is a call to abandon one’s own desire and to do what the Lord desires. Beliefs, worship, dealings, social conduct, morals — in short, there should be no corner of life in which a person is subject to his own desire and his own will. This word begins with a negation: there is no object of worship; then an affirmation: except Allah, the Glorified and Exalted. A denial of everything that would break us from Allah and join us to some other. This is a call to bring a person out of the servitude of man into the servitude of the one Allah.
This same thing was expressed by Hazrat Mughirah ibn Shu‘bah (may Allah be pleased with him) on one occasion before the Persian commander-in-chief Rustam. Before this same commander, Rib‘i ibn Amir (may Allah be pleased with him) conveyed this purpose in these words: “Allah has sent us to (bring) every person who wishes to leave the servitude of servants (people) and enter the servitude of Allah — from the narrowness of this world to its vastness, and from the injustice of the (false) systems to the just system of Islam. And He has commanded us to convey the call of His religion to His servants.”
The result of this call was that Umar, the son of Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), who had been a herder of camels, when he became caliph ruled over twenty-two lakh (2.2 million) square miles; and the greatest rulers of the world were in awe of him, and in justice and fairness his examples are cited even today. It was the result of this same word that in the Battle of Mu’tah, under the command of Khalid ibn al-Walid (may Allah be pleased with him), the Muslim army clashed with an army fifty times its own size — for the Master of victory and defeat is Allah, the Mighty and Majestic.
