English translation
Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم said: “Allah Most High loves that believing servant of His who is needy, chaste and burdened with a family.” (Ibn Majah)
This blessed hadith is a support and a shining command for every believer who is hard-pressed and helpless, yet who — in spite of all his needs and in spite of the trial sent by Allah Most High — neither shows ingratitude nor takes the path of impatience. That is, even though he is needy and in want, and has children with him whose maintenance also falls upon him, he keeps full regard for his chastity, honour and dignity; he passes his days in hardship and distress, yet he does not rush towards unlawful earning, nor does he wound his own standing by stretching out his hand before people. Allah Most High has a special attachment with such servants of His, and He loves such servants — for although a man may be utterly hard-pressed and destitute, on account of the knowledge of religion that Allah Most High has granted him and the faculties of understanding and insight with which He has favoured him, even in this state he does not let patience and gratitude slip from his hand, nor does he break the limits of the lawful and the unlawful that Allah Most High has fixed.
It is by this very understanding and discernment that such a person dreads stretching out his hand in begging before anyone, because he keeps before him this saying of the Master of both worlds صلى الله عليه وسلم: whoever stretches out his hand in begging before people so that he may become wealthy, disfigures his own face until the Day of Resurrection and will eat the hot stones of Hell. So now let whoever wishes provide these things for himself in greater measure or in lesser measure. (Reported by Tirmidhi)
The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم severely condemned this matter here and declared it forbidden — that a Muslim should stretch out his hand before people, as a result of which the radiance of his face departs and he needlessly wounds his own humanity and nobility.
In another narration it comes thus: whoever is content with little sustenance, Allah Most High becomes pleased with his little deeds. (Reported by Bayhaqi)
To remain content with the little sustenance given by Allah Most High is in reality a great proof of the soundness of a person’s nature, and it is so great a quality that even if a person does not outwardly possess an abundance of good deeds, this can make up for it; but if this quality is absent, nothing else can take its place. The real worth is that of a sound heart. Allah Most High says:
“The Day when neither wealth nor children will avail, except for one who comes to Allah, the Lord of Might, with a sound and whole heart.” (Ash-Shu‘ara, 88–89)
A sound and whole heart, or qalb saleem, means a heart free of love for the wealth and goods of this world.
In another narration it comes thus: whoever is hungry or in need and conceals his condition from people, it is a right upon Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, that He arrange for him a whole year’s provision by lawful means. (Reported by Bayhaqi)
That is, whoever bears the pains of hunger and hardship but does not let himself be disgraced and humiliated, Allah Most High necessarily helps him in the safeguarding of his honour and dignity and provides him some means of sustenance. But Allah’s help remains with him only so long as he values his own honour and keeps regard for modesty.
In the light of these blessed ahadith this point should easily be understood: that in every condition a person should exercise patience and gratitude over the wealth given to him by Allah Most High, because by adopting such conduct he becomes a beloved servant of Allah — and for any human being what greater good fortune could there be than this?
