English translation
Narrated by 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her): People asked the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) about the soothsayers — whether what they foretell may be relied upon or not. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to them: "They are nothing (that is, what they claim is baseless, so place no trust or reliance on what they say)." The people said: "O Messenger of Allah, sometimes they tell of something, or give a report, that turns out to be true." The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "That word is a truth which the jinn (i.e. the devil) snatches and drops into the ear of his friend (the soothsayer) the way one cock calls another to pick up a grain. Then those soothsayers mix more than a hundred lies into it."
A kahin (soothsayer) is one who foretells events and happenings yet to come and lays claim to knowledge of the unseen and to the secrets of the hidden; this occupation is called kahanah. Before the Prophet (peace be upon him), soothsaying was at its height in Arabia. The Arabs used to trust and rely on what the soothsayers told them. Some of these soothsayers claimed that the jinn who go up to the heavens tell them what is said there.
Something of the same kind as soothsaying was 'irafah: certain people would foretell hidden things by means of particular objects and certain signs. Like the practitioners of sand-divination, they too would tell where stolen goods were to be found, or where a missing person was, and so on. Such people were called 'arraf. An astrologer is also called an 'arraf. The scholars write that the knowledge of soothsaying, divination, sand-divination, jafr, astrology and the like is forbidden; and for that reason the money earned through these arts is also forbidden — both the one who takes it and the one who gives it are guilty of sin.
In one narration it comes that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever learns a portion of astrology has learnt a portion of sorcery; and the more he learns of astrology, the more he learns of sorcery." (Abu Dawud, Ibn Majah)
Most of what these soothsayers, astrologers and the claimants of similar arts foretell proves to be false; but those who believe in them, who are convinced of their truthfulness and have fallen into misguidance, overlook all their false statements and try to prove them truthful by citing the single instance that happened to be correct.
Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: "Whoever goes to a soothsayer or an astrologer and asks him something (that is, enquires about matters of the unseen), his prayers for forty days and nights are not accepted." (Muslim). This is a thing gravely harmful for such a person, and a sign of the utmost misfortune — that his prayer, which is the most excellent and the most exalted of acts of worship, will not be accepted, even though the obligation itself will have been discharged.
In another narration it comes that the Prophet (peace be upon him) led the morning prayer at Hudaybiyah after rain had fallen in the night, and asked the Companions: "Do you know what your Lord has said?" The Companions said: "Allah and His Messenger know best." He (peace be upon him) said: "Allah Almighty has said: among My servants some have become believers and some disbelievers. Whoever said, 'We have been given rain by the grace and mercy of Allah,' has believed in Me and denied the (influence of the) stars; and whoever said, 'This rain came to us through the influence of such-and-such a star,' has denied Me and believed in the (power of the) stars." (Bukhari and Muslim). That is, whoever holds that the stars have influence in the universe is a denier of Allah, and whoever does not hold that belief is one who affirms Allah.
