اللہ تعالیٰ کا منشور رحمت
عَنْ ثَوْبَانَ قَالَ سَمِعْتُ رَسُوْلَ اللهِ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ يَقُوْلُ مَا أُحِبُّ أَنَّ لِيَ الدُّنْيَا بِهٰذِهِ الْآيَةِ ”يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِيْنَ أَسْرَفُوْا عَلٰى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوْا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللهِ إِنَّ اللهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ جَمِيْعًا إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْمُ“ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ فَمَنْ أَشْرَكَ؟ فَسَكَتَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ثُمَّ قَالَ أَلَا وَمَنْ أَشْرَكَ ثَلَاثَ مَرَّاتٍ ـ
حضرت ثوبان رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ میں نے رسول کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم سے سنا، آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم فرماتے تھے کہ: ”مجھے اس آیت کے مقابلے میں ساری دنیا (اور اس کی نعمتوں) کا لینا بھی پسند نہیں۔ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِيْنَ أَسْرَفُوْا عَلٰى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوْا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللهِ إِنَّ اللهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوْبَ جَمِيْعًا إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُوْرُ الرَّحِيْمُ، (زمر-۵۳) ﴿اے میرے بندو! جنہوں نے (گناہ کر کے) اپنے نفسوں پر ظلم کیا ہے (اور اپنے کو تباہ کر لیا ہے) تم اللہ کی رحمت سے ناامید مت ہو، اللہ سارے گناہوں کو بخش دیتا ہے، وہ بہت بخشنے والا بڑا مہربان ہے۔﴾“ ایک شخص نے عرض کیا: حضرت! جن لوگوں نے شرک کیا ہے، کیا ان کے لیے بھی یہی ارشاد ہے؟ آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے پہلے تو کچھ سکوت کیا، پھر تین دفعہ فرمایا: سن لو! مشرکوں کے لیے بھی اللہ تعالیٰ کا یہ ارشاد ہے (یعنی جس شخص نے شرک کیا اور اپنی زندگی ہی میں توبہ کر لی تو وہ بھی اس آیت کی بشارت کا مستحق ہے)۔ (مسند احمد)
اس حدیث مبارکہ میں جس آیت کا حوالہ ہے یہ اہل ایمان کے لیے بہت بڑی ڈھارس ہے اور اس میں مومنین کو حکم دیا گیا ہے کہ اللہ کی رحمت سے ناامید نہ ہوں۔ بلاشبہ اس میں ہر قسم کے گناہ گاروں کے لیے بڑی بشارت ہے، کروڑوں گناہ بھی اللہ غفور و رحیم کی رحمت اور مغفرت کے سامنے کوئی حیثیت نہیں رکھتے، غور کرنے کی بات ہے خود بندوں کا مالک و پروردگار ان ہی کو مخاطب کر کے فرما رہا ہے کہ تم میری رحمت سے مایوس نہ ہو۔
اس آیت مبارکہ میں اللہ تعالیٰ کی مغفرت کی وسعت کا بیان ہے۔ یعنی ایمان لانے سے قبل یا توبہ و استغفار کا احساس پیدا ہونے سے پہلے کتنے بھی گناہ کیے ہوں، انسان یہ نہ سمجھے کہ میں تو بہت زیادہ گناہ گار ہوں، مجھے اللہ تعالیٰ کیونکر معاف کرے گا؟ بلکہ سچے دل سے اگر ایمان قبول کر لے گا یا سچی توبہ کر لے گا تو اللہ تعالیٰ تمام گناہ معاف فرما دے گا۔ شان نزول کی روایت سے بھی یہی مفہوم ثابت ہوتا ہے، کچھ کافر و مشرک تھے جنہوں نے کثرت سے قتل اور زنا کاری کا ارتکاب کیا تھا، یہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم کی خدمت میں حاضر ہوئے اور کہا کہ آپ کی دعوت صحیح ہے، لیکن ہم لوگ بہت زیادہ خطاکار ہیں، اگر ہم ایمان لے آئیں تو کیا وہ سب معاف ہو جائیں گے، جس پر اس آیت کا نزول ہوا۔ (بحوالہ بخاری تفسیر سورہ زمر) لیکن اس حدیث کا مطلب یہ نہیں ہے کہ اللہ کی رحمت و مغفرت کا سہارا لے کر انسان خوب گناہ کیے جائے، اور اس کے احکام و فرائض کی ذرا پرواہ نہ کرے اور اس کی حدود اور ضابطوں کو بے دردی سے پامال کرے، اس طرح کے عمل سے اللہ کے غیض و غضب کو دعوت دے کر اس کی رحمت و مغفرت کی امید کرنا حماقت اور خام خیالی ہے، ایسے لوگوں کو یاد رکھنا چاہیے کہ اللہ تعالیٰ جہاں اپنے بندوں کے لیے غفور و رحیم ہے، وہاں نافرمانوں کے لیے ﴿عَزِيْزٌ ذُوانْتِقَامٍ﴾ بھی ہے۔ چنانچہ قرآن کریم میں متعدد جگہوں پر ان دو پہلوؤں کو ساتھ ساتھ بیان کیا گیا ہے۔ جیسے سورہ حجر میں فرمایا: ﴿اے نبی! میرے بندوں کو خبر دے دو کہ میں بہت بخشنے والا اور بڑا ہی مہربان ہوں۔ اور ساتھ ہی میرا عذاب بھی نہایت دردناک ہے۔﴾ (حجر ۴۹-۵۰)
اللہ تعالیٰ کی ذات سب سے زیادہ رحیم و کریم ہے وہ ارحم الراحمین ہے۔ مشرک اور کافر کے علاوہ سب کی مغفرت فرما دے گا، جس قدر گناہ سرزد ہو جائیں، اس کی رحمت سے ناامید نہ ہوں اور برابر توبہ و استغفار کا اہتمام کرتے رہیں، توبہ بار بار ٹوٹتی رہے پھر بھی برابر توبہ میں لگے رہیں، کسی دن انشاء اللہ پکی توبہ بھی ہو جائے گی۔ اللہ تعالیٰ کی رحمت سے ہمیشہ پر امید رہیے اور یہ یقین رکھیے کہ میرے گناہ کتنے ہی زیادہ ہوں اللہ تعالیٰ کی رحمت اس سے کہیں زیادہ وسیع ہے۔ سمندر کے جھاگ سے زیادہ گناہ کرنے والا بھی جب اپنے گناہوں پر شرمسار ہو کر اللہ تعالیٰ کے حضور گڑگڑاتا ہے تو اللہ اس کی سنتا ہے اور اس کو اپنے دامن رحمت میں پناہ دے دیتا ہے جیسا کہ ایک حدیث میں سو آدمیوں کے قاتل کی توبہ کا واقعہ آتا ہے، (بحوالہ بخاری و مسلم)۔

English translation
Thawban (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saying: "I would not wish to have the whole world — and all its bounties — in place of this verse: 'O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful.' (Az-Zumar 39:53)" A man asked: "O Messenger of Allah, does this apply also to those who have committed shirk?" The Prophet ﷺ was silent for a while, then said three times: "Listen! And to whoever has committed shirk as well." (That is, whoever committed shirk and then repented within his lifetime is also entitled to the glad tidings of this verse.)
The verse referred to in this blessed hadith is an immense consolation for the people of faith, and in it the believers are commanded never to despair of Allah's mercy. Without doubt it carries great glad tidings for sinners of every kind: even sins beyond counting have no weight before the mercy and forgiveness of Allah, the Ever-Forgiving, the Most Merciful. It is worth reflecting that the Master and Sustainer of His servants is Himself addressing them, saying: do not despair of My mercy.
This blessed verse describes the vastness of Allah's forgiveness. However many sins a person may have committed before embracing faith, or before the awareness of repentance and seeking forgiveness awoke in him, he should not think: "I am far too great a sinner; how could Allah ever forgive me?" Rather, if he sincerely accepts faith or repents truly from the heart, Allah will forgive all his sins. The report of the occasion of revelation establishes the same meaning: there were some disbelievers and idolaters who had committed a great deal of killing and fornication. They came to the Prophet ﷺ and said that his call was true, but that they were people of very many misdeeds — if they embraced faith, would all of it be forgiven? It was then that this verse was revealed (as reported in Bukhari, the commentary on Surah Az-Zumar). But this hadith does not mean that a person may lean on Allah's mercy and forgiveness and go on sinning freely, showing no regard for His commands and obligations and trampling His limits and rules underfoot. To invite Allah's wrath and anger through such conduct and still hope for His mercy and forgiveness is foolishness and self-deception. Such people should remember that just as Allah is Forgiving and Merciful towards His obedient servants, He is also "Mighty, Owner of Retribution" towards the disobedient. Accordingly the Noble Qur'an mentions these two aspects together in many places. As He says in Surah Al-Hijr: "O Prophet, inform My servants that I am the Most Forgiving, the Most Merciful — and that My punishment too is a most painful punishment." (Al-Hijr 15:49–50)
Allah's being is the most Merciful and Most Generous of all; He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy. Apart from the idolater and the disbeliever, He will forgive everyone. However many sins are committed, do not despair of His mercy; keep up repentance and the seeking of forgiveness constantly. Even if your repentance breaks again and again, keep returning to it again and again — one day, Allah willing, a firm repentance will come. Always remain hopeful of Allah's mercy, and be certain that however many one's sins may be, Allah's mercy is far vaster still. Even one whose sins outnumber the foam of the sea, when he stands ashamed of them and humbly implores Allah, Allah hears him and takes him into the shelter of His mercy — as in the hadith about the repentance of the man who had killed a hundred people (reported in Bukhari and Muslim).
