English translation
An-Nu'man bin Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet ﷺ said: "The likeness of the one who upholds the limits set by Allah — the obedient — and the one who falls into transgressing them — the disobedient — is like a people who drew lots over a ship, as a result of which some got the upper deck and some the lower. Those who were below had to go up for water. They thought: why not make a hole in our own portion, so that we do not trouble those above us. Now if those above let those below have their way, all of them will perish; but if they stop them, all of them will be saved."
This noble hadith brings out the importance of enjoining good and forbidding evil through an example so plain that even a person of the slightest understanding can grasp it. In it the Prophet ﷺ gives the likeness of two groups travelling in a two-deck ship. One group is on the upper deck while the other is on the lower. Those below have to keep going up for the water they need. To avoid this, they think: why not make a hole in the ship and draw the water they need through it. Even a person of ordinary sense can see that if they are not stopped from doing this, it will be the death of all of them. Calling to goodness and virtue is in reality the stopping of the forces of evil and wickedness, which by their wrongdoing turn society towards ruin. And just as the people seated on the upper deck cannot be negligent about stopping those below from their action, nor absolve themselves by saying "what is it to us" — for that is the making of their own destruction — likewise, if the majority of a society becomes heedless of enjoining good and forbidding evil and consoles itself by saying "what is it to us," then such a society is set on the road to suicide and will very soon be brought to ruin.
In the same way, if the sensible passengers of that ship wait, saying that they will see about it when these foolish ones actually do something — for now let us enjoy the voyage — and do not stir before that moment, what can the outcome be but destruction? Precisely so, if the righteous elements of a society wait until evil comes to their own doorstep before they act, their end too will certainly be ruin, just like the people of that ship.
This example also makes clear that calling to good and preventing evil is the responsibility of every individual in a Muslim society. Just as all the remaining passengers of the ship would stake everything they have to stop those few foolish ones, so too every one of us must treat this work as his own responsibility and carry it out. Whatever one is able to do in this regard should never be passed over, whether it is a call to some small act of goodness or the preventing of some minor evil — for at times it is these very small acts that become the forerunners of a very great outcome. Just as the passengers of that ship would not permit even a needle-sized hole to be made in it, and would make no compromise on this because it would be the forerunner of the ship's sinking, so too we should make no compromise whatsoever in this responsibility of ours, and should do whatever lies within our capacity. Allah says: "The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, establish prayer and give zakah, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those — Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise." (At-Tawbah 9:71)
